Voters in the USA Today/NFCA softball poll made California its preseason No. 1, a day after voters in the ESPN.com/USA poll did the same.

This is the first preseason No. 1 nod in either poll for the Bears, who were 53-13 in 2004.

Cal, which has appeared in three consecutive Women's College World Series championship games and return eight starters from last season's WCWS runner-up squad, received 14 first-place votes and 729 points to edge out No. 2 and two-time defending WCWS champion UCLA (12 first-place votes, 705 points). No. 3 Arizona (4, 698) was followed by Oklahoma (617) and LSU (541).

Cal features four returning All-Americans in senior third baseman Vicky Galindo, senior centerfielder Kaleo Eldredge, junior pitcher Kristina Thorson and senior shortstop Chelsea Spencer. Additionally, the Cal lineup sports eight returning All-Pac-10 picks, including senior leftfielder Lindsay James, senior pitcher Kelly Anderson, senior second baseman Jessica Pamanian and junior catcher Haley Woods.

The Golden Bears open the 2005 season against San Jose State on Feb. 5. First pitch at Levine-Fricke in Berkeley is scheduled for 12 noon.
