Jan. 26, 2005
Both national pre-season polls have been released, and the two-time defending NCAA Champion UCLA softball team is in the top-three of both polls. In the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll, released on Tuesday, UCLA earned two first-place votes in the poll and ranks third behind California and Arizona. In the USA Today/NFCA poll, which was released on Wednesday, the Bruins rank second with 12 first-place votes behind California.
The Pac-10 Conference, home to the last four NCAA Softball Championship teams, has seven of its eight softball schools ranked in both polls. California is the consensus pre-season No. 1 team, while UCLA and Arizona round out the top-three in both polls. Stanford is ranked fifth by ESPN.com/USA Softball and sixth by USA Today/NFCA. Washington is No. 9 in one poll, 11th in the other, while Oregon is either 13th or 14th depending on the poll and Oregon State is ranked at No. 16 in both polls.
UCLA opens its 2005 season this Sunday, January 30, with a noon doubleheader at UC Santa Barbara. The Bruins will then play host to UC Riverside and the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament during the first week in February. Due to ongoing renovations to UCLA's Easton Stadium, the UC Riverside game will take place at Bill Barber Park in Irvine, Calif., on Feb. 2, while the Winsberg Tournament will be held at Mayfair Park in Lakewood, Calif., Feb. 4-6.
