No. 1 Stanford Opens Dual Season Thursday
Jan. 26, 2005
Stanford, Calif. - Top-ranked Stanford will open the 2005 season this week as the Cardinal play host to UC Davis on Thursday and No. 56 Cal Poly on Friday. Both matches are set to begin at 1:30 p.m., weather permitting.
With five ranked singles players and two-ranked doubles teams, the Cardinal has already seen a number of impressive performances in the individual tournaments, as two-time All-American Alice Barnes and three-time All-American Erin Burdette winning the Pac-10 Indoors Doubles title in Seattle last week. Burdette, ranked No. 22 in the Jan. 11 ITA poll, also claimed the singles championship at the University of Washington.
At the Freeman Invitational, three Stanford players advanced to the singles first flight semifinals. Un-ranked freshman, Lejla Hodzic, made a strong showing, finishing in second place and defeating four-straight ranked opponents on her way to the championship match. Hodzic and fellow freshman Whitney Deason also played for the championship in doubles, making it to the final match in their third tournament (the duo also posted a runner-up finish at the ITA Northwest Regional and advanced to the finals at the Thunderbird Invitational when the championship match was not played).
UC Davis (0-1) has no ranked players, while Cal Poly (1-3) duo Nicole Shabaz and Samantha Waller are ranked No. 37 in doubles. The Aggies opened the season in Arizona, but their match against the Wildcats was cancelled due to rain. In Tempe, the Aggies lost their season-opener to Arizona State, 7-0. The Mustangs started the season with a 7-0 win over Cal State Fullerton, but have dropped three-straight matches to Santa Clara, USC and Cal.
