No. 28 California Defeats Santa Clara, 7-0

BERKELEY - The No. 28 Golden Bears (1-0) opened their 2005 season with a commanding win, never dropping a set and defeating Santa Clara 7-0 at Berkeley's Hellman Tennis Center.
California picked up the doubles point, sweeping all three doubles matches. The No. 30 doubles team of Patrick Briaud and Conor Niland defeated Santa Clara's Taylor Bedilion and Jan Macek 8-5 on court one. Sophomore's Tyler Browne and Daniel Sebescen picked up the win on court two, beating Francisco Zepponi and Eric Kochanski, 8-4. Cal completed the sweep on court three, where Ken Nakahara and John Pettit beat Bobby Rasmussen and Ben Hidalgo, 8-4.
The Bears success carried over into singles, where Cal won all six matches without losing a set. No. 21 Niland finished strong against Bedilion on court one, winning 6-1; 7-5. Sebescen, ranked No. 27 in the west region, beat Macek on court two, 6-4; 6-2. Co-captain Briaud added a win, beating Zepponi 6-1; 6-2.
Sophomore Brown notched an impressive against Kochanski, with a final score of 6-0; 6-1, on court four. Court five saw Nakahara defeat Rasmussen in straight sets, 6-1; 6-2. Sophomore Dean Wallace completed the sweep for the Bears on court six, where he tallied a victory over AJ Kerin, 6-1; 6-3.
With the win, Cal improves to 1-0, while the Mustangs fall to 2-1. The Bears will next face Stanford, this Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Berkeley's Hellman Tennis Center.
