LOS ANGELES - The fourth-ranked UCLA women's tennis team posted its first shutout of the season Thursday, defeating UC Irvine, 7-0 at UCLA's Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins improve to 2-0 on the year, while UC Irvine falls to 1-3 overall with the loss.
UCLA, which defeated LMU, 6-1 in its season opener a week ago, came out strong from the start on Thursday, capturing all three doubles contests to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Once singles play began, the Bruins quickly went ahead 2-0 when Alex McGoodwin posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Hui Leow at court No. 4. Senior Sarah Gregg was nearly as dominant, losing just two games en route to a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Kristina Boss on court No. 5.
UCLA clinched the match at court No. 2, where ninth-ranked Riza Zalameda recorded a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Izabela Mijic. Fellow freshman Tracy Lin, playing next to Zalameda on court No. 3, also turned in a solid showing, knocking off Inna Agababian, 6-2, 6-1.
The Bruins were tested somewhat in the final two matches of the day, however were able to come away with wins on both courts. Freshman Elizabeth Lumpkin rallied from a set down to defeat Jessica Broadfoot, 4-6, 6-1, (10-7) back on court No. 6. Sophomore Daniela Bercek, ranked 20th in the country, was extended to a first-set tiebreaker against 102-ranked Anna Bentzer at court No. 1, however ended up winning the match 7-6(2), 6-2.
UCLA is expecting a tough test in its next match against No. 37 Pepperdine this Saturday at the LATC beginning at Noon. Junior Laura Gordon, who has missed the first two matches due to injury, could see her first action of the season in that match.
