Husky Men Net 5-2 Win Over New Mexico

Jan. 28, 2005

SEATTLE, Wash. - Trailing for the first time this season after losing the doubles point, Washington's men's tennis team responded with a dominant performance in singles to earn a 5-2 win over New Mexico today. The 21st-ranked Huskies (3-0) took five of the six singles matches in straight sets to quell any upset notions the 65th-ranked Lobos may have entertained after winning the doubles point.

Doubles play was a tense, close affair, with the point coming down to a tiebreak at No. 1 doubles between UW's Alex Vlaski and Christoph Palmanshofer and New Mexico's third-ranked doubles team of Ryan Stotland and David Kowalski. The Lobo duo pulled out to a 6-3 lead in the tiebreak, but Vlaski saved two match points on his serve. On New Mexico's third match point, Vlaski pulled a forehand return wide to give New Mexico the early 1-0 match lead. Mike Ricks and Andy Kuharszky had put the Dawgs up 1-0 in doubles play with a quick 8-2 win at No. 3, but New Mexico countered with an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles over UW's Daniel Chu and Peter Scharler.

Washington lost no confidence heading into singles play. The lower half of the Huskies singles line-up lost a grand total of only three games in their three victories. Scharler put UW on the board with a 6-1, 6-1 win over New Mexico's Eric Conklin at No. 5 singles. Floyd followed Scharler off the court soon after, routing Derek Boland 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. New Mexico got one point back when Max Jones downed Chu, 6-1, 6-3, at the third singles spot.

Kuharszky cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles, and remains a perfect 3-0 in singles and in doubles in dual play thus far in his freshman campaign. Two-time All-American Vlaski clinched the Husky win at the top singles spot, downing Ryan Stotland in straight sets. Moments later, the Lobos' David Kowalski was forced to retire due to injury, down a set and 4-1 in the second to Palmanshofer, and the match was finalized.

The Huskies will be back in action on Sunday, Jan. 30 at 2 p.m. against the 55th-ranked Michigan State Spartans at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
