Beavers Suffer First Pac-10 Dual Loss

Jan. 28, 2005

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State heavyweight Ty Watterson ran his winning streak to 10 matches Friday night but the Beavers fell to Cal State-Fullerton 20-17 in Pacific-10 wrestling at Gill Coliseum. OSU (9-5-1 overall, 4-1-1 Pacific-10) suffered its first loss of the season in a conference dual; earlier Friday, OSU had tied Stanford 18-18.

The Beavers now wrap up their weekend on Saturday at 2 p.m. when they host 16th-ranked Arizona State.

'It's another opportunity,' Wells said of going against the conference's only nationally ranked team. 'We've just got to do the basics - nothing fancy, just the right things. Arizona State has a good group, and we're anxious to meet them.'

Against Cal State-Fullerton (11-3, 4-1), a crowd of 884 saw Titan 197-pounder Landon Seefeldt, ranked 10th nationally by Amateur Wrestling News and ninth by InterMat, beat OSU's Travis Gardner 12-4 in the night's final match to secure the win for CSUF.

'I didn't think we wrestled well,' said Wells, whose team had won eight of its last 10 duals going into Friday. 'Hats off to the Titans and Dan Hicks (former OSU wrestler and assistant coach, and current CSUF head coach) - they did a nice job and won the close matches. They took risks and made them pay off.'

The Beavers had a one-point loss by 149-pounder Orlando Perez, 3-2 to Jeff Silva. OSU also lost chances at additional team bonus points in several of the Beavers' victories, unable to turn decisions into major decisions or lock up a pin when the chance was there.

'We sat on some leads and didn't get after them,' Wells said. 'We made so many mistakes ... in probably three matches, we chose to do the wrong thing; if we don't do that, then we'd have been right there.'

Watterson, ranked 15th in the nation by AWN and 11th by IM, pushed his win streak into double digits and bumped his record to 17-1 this season with a 13-5 major decision over Chris Chambers. OSU 165-pounder Matt Ellis, who had taken his first loss of the season earlier Friday, bounced back for a 14-5 major decision over Shawn Reilly; Ellis is ranked 14th by both AWN and IM and is now 7-1 this season.

OSU also got decisions from 133-pounder Bobby Pfennigs, 157-pounder Tony Hook and 184-pounder Dan Pitsch. Pfennigs has won 7 of his last 8 matches and is now 12-10 this season, Hook has won six of his last eight and is 8-6, and Pitsch has won 4 of his last 5 and is 12-8.
