Nine Cougars Reach the Winners' Circle at Cougar Indoor Track

PULLMAN, Wash. - Six Washington State men and three women won events and 11 meet records fell Saturday during the second day of the Cougar Indoor Track & Field Meet, held at the WSU Indoor Track Facility. The meet featured teams from the University of California Berkeley, Utah State, Idaho and WSU.
WSU junior Darion Powell (Kirkland, Wash.), the leader after the first day, won the heptathlon with a school record and NCAA Provisional Qualifying total of 5,631 points. Cougar junior transfer Ryan Thomas (Olympia, Wash.) finished fourth with 5,001 points. Saturday, Powell won the 60m hurdles in a time of 8.29 seconds and was second in the pole vault with a PR of 15-feet, 1 inch (4.60m).
Robin Mikesh, a junior from Sumner, Wash., won the women's high jump with a personal best, meet record and NCAA PQ mark of 5-10 (1.78m).
Other Cougars rewriting meet records included James McSwain and Jamil Smith. McSwain (Las Vegas) won the men's 60m dash with a PR time of 6.73 seconds, just 1/100 of a second off the NCAA PQ. Smith (Palmdale, Calif.) won the men's triple jump with a leap of 50-6 3/4 (15.41m).
Joining their WSU teammates with wins Saturday were Paul Nicoletti (Snohomish, Wash.) in the men's pole vault, John Cassleman (Pullman) in the 400m dash, Justin Chambers (Albany, Ore.) in the mile run, Nicole Hatcher (Kennewick, Wash.) in the women's 60m dash, and Selena Galaviz (Toppenish, Wash.) in the women's 400m dash.
Utah State's Justin Wickard won the men's 60m hurdles with an NCAA PQ and meet record time of 7.89. Teammate Amy Egan is the meet record holder in the women's mile. California Golden Bears broke meet records with wins from Brook Turner (women's 200m), Trinety White (women's long jump), Darren Woods (men's 200m), Alex McClary (men's 800m), and the women's 4x400m relay.
Washington State will send a select group of track and field competitors to the Husker Invitational meet next weekend in Lincoln, Neb.
