No. 14 Beavers Topped by Stanford in Low Scoring Meet

Jan. 28, 2005

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Oregon State and Stanford each had struggles on the floor exercise, but the Cardinal proved better capable of overcoming the adversity and beat the Beavers 193.125-192.350 in a Pac-10 dual Friday night at the Burnham Pavilion.

The Beavers, competing without five routines from their usual lineup, were without Heather Justus due to a sprained elbow and Thérèse Videan was limited to the uneven bars by a strained calf.

Oregon State's bars team got the evening started in the right direction with a solid 48.525 score, in what turned out to be the only event the Beavers topped the Cardinal. Chrissy Lamun, who anchored the lineup, led the way tying a season-high with a 9.800. Despite her injury woes Videan gave a gritty performance posting a score of 9.725, while Chelsea Plourde posted a 9.700. OSU also counted Heidi Goehrings's 9.675 and Lindsay Nelson's 9.625.

The makeshift OSU vault team struggled to overcome the challenge of replacing 10.0 vaults of Justus, Videan, and Megan Devencenzi. Angela Morales tied for second overall on the vault with a score of 9.825 and Daylee Ingalls added a 9.675 and Plourde a 9.600. The Beavers also counted scores by Yuki Lamb (9.575) and Jacey Draper (9.350) both of whom are returning from injuries and were competing in their first collegiate meet.

The Beavers carried a slim lead of .025 into the third rotation but continued struggles on the floor exercise allowed Stanford to take the lead for the first time on the evening. Devencenzi scored a season-high 9.80 to lead Oregon State and Morales posted a 9.725, but it wasn't enough to overcome two falls. Oregon State also counted scores of 9.575 by Goehring, 9.375 by Nelson, and 9.325 by Lamun. Christa Piazza added a 9.525 in an exhibition.

With Oregon State trailing by .475 heading into the final rotation was unable to cut the deficit scoring 48.000 on the beam. Lamun and Goehring led the beam team with 9.625 scores. Morales and Ingalls each added a 9.600, and the Beavers also counted Courtney Dennison's 9.550.

The Beavers lineup did not include an all-around athlete giving the Cardinal a sweep with Alex Pintchouk taking the all-around title with a score of 38.675.

The Oregon State gymnasts return to Gill Coliseum next Friday night at 7 p.m. against No. 17 Arizona State.
