Pickler, Kien Win at Cougar Indoor Meet Friday Night

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State's Diana Pickler and Mason Kien were winners Friday night at the Cougar Indoor Track & Field Meet, held at the WSU Indoor Track Facility.

Pickler, a redshirt sophomore from Sachse, Texas, broke her own school record in the pentathlon with an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark of 3,928 points while junior transfer Katie Miller (Vancouver, Wash.) finished second among the eight competitors with 3,632 points. Pickler ran the fastest 60m hurdles (8.60 seconds), had the best high jump (5-feet, 8 inches), the top long jump (18-8), and won the 800m (2 minutes, 29.33 seconds).

Kien, a sophomore from Des Moines, Wash., won the men's long jump with a leap of 23-feet, 3/4 inches (7.03m).

In the weight throws, California's Nate Rolfe won the men's 35-pound event with a meet record throw of 58-8 1/2 (17.89m) and Idaho's Jen Broncheau won the women's 20-pound event with her toss of 53-10 1/2.

After the first four events in the men's heptathlon, WSU junior Darion Powell (Kirkland, Wash.) has the first day lead with 3,217 points while WSU junior transfer Ryan Thomas (Olympia, Wash.) was in second place with 3,095 points. Powell had the best long jump (23-2) and shot put (49-1) efforts of the day while Thomas cleared the best high jump at 6-7. The final three events - the 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1,000m run, will be contested Saturday.

Competition between athletes from California, Utah State, Idaho and WSU continues Saturday with the remaining field and all the running events. Admission to the Indoor Practice Facility is $5 per person and the first event begins at 9 a.m.
