Erica McClain Earns NCAA Indoor Qualifying Mark, School Record In Triple Jump

Jan. 30, 2005

Boise, Id - Freshman Erica McClain, competing in her first collegiate competition, qualified for the NCAA Indoor Nationals later this year in the triple jump with an effort of 43-10 1/2 (13.37m) to highlight Stanford's participation on Saturday at the Athletes.com Invitational. That effort was also a school record. The old mark was 42-6 (12.95m) set by Jackie Edwards in 1992.

McClain, a three-time Texas state prep champion in the triple jump, won the competition over nine other competitors. The national qualifying mark was 43-7 3/4 (13.30m). McClain also won the long jump (19-10 3/4, 6.06m). That long jump mark is also second-best in school history.

Stanford produced other first place winners during the two days of competition. Janice Davis won the 60 meters (7.45), Christine Moschella raced to victory in the 200 meters (24.39), Ashley Freeman captured the 400 meters (56.00), freshman Laura Mottaz ran to victory in the 800 meters (2:16.24), the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Janice Davis, Nashonme Johnson, Christine Moschella, and Ashley Purnell won in a time of 3:43.05, Lindsey Gannaway captured the high jump (5-5, 1.65m) while Melissa Yunghans won the shot put (45-10 1/2, 13.98m).
