This Week In Pac-10 Men's Basketball
Jan. 31, 2005
While WASHINGTON and ARIZONA have battled to a tie atop the Pac-10 standings, STANFORD has reeled off six straight wins to climb within one game of the league leaders... Stanford isn't the only streaking team in the Bay Area as CALIFORNIA has rolled off three straight victories. Both the Cardinal and the Bears look to continue their winning ways this week, but must do so at ARIZONA and ARIZONA STATE... UCLA and USC travel to Pullman and Seattle to take on WASHINGTON STATE and WASHINGTON, while OREGON STATE hosts OREGON in the 322nd meeting of the Civil War.
THOMAS KELATI, WASHINGTON STATE
U.S. BANK PAC-10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Kelati, a senior forward from Walla Walla, Wash., averaged 22.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists in leading the Cougars to a split with the Arizona schools on the road. In the 68-62 loss at Arizona State, he scored 17 points and grabbed a season-high nine rebounds. In the 70-63 upset victory over No. 11 Arizona, Kelati matched his career-high with 27 points, shooting 9-of-14 (.643) from the field, including 7-of-11 (.636) from three-point range. He also added seven rebounds and three assists as the Cougars snapped a 38-game losing streak to Arizona. It also marked the first win in Tucson since 1984.
For the week, he shot 16-of-30 (.533) from the field and 8-of-17 (.471) from three-point range.
It's the first weekly honor for Kelati, WSU's 15th honor all-time, and first since Marcus Moore was honored on Dec. 10, 2001.

Saturday's loss to Washington State snapped ARIZONA's 38-game win streak against the Cougars, which was tied for the fifth-longest win streak against one opponent in NCAA history. The last time Washington State defeated Arizona came on Jan. 30, 1986, a 65-63 overtime win in Pullman, Wash. Five players to see action in Saturday's game, including four WSU players, weren't yet born the last time Washington State downed Arizona... Saturday's loss marked the first time Arizona lost a home game to a team that entered the game with a losing record since Dec. 6, 1986, in a 68-67 loss to Utah. The Utes entered that contest with a 1-2 record. Since that loss 19 seasons ago, Arizona has lost a total of 25 games at McKale Center and in only one of those losses previously has a team had as low as a .500 record. That occurred when 5-5 New Mexico defeated Arizona, 70-68, on Dec. 21, 1999. Since the start of the 1986-87 season, Arizona is 259-26 (.909) in McKale Center... The Cats look to snap a three-game losing streak to Stanford. No Pac-10 team has defeated a Lute Olson-coached Arizona squad four straight times.
ARIZONA STATE posted 20 assists on 22 made field goals against Washington State... The Sun Devils are 11-2 when they outrebound their opponent and 13-1 when they lead at the half... ASU is 23-2 (.920) in the past three seasons when it shoots 50 percent... Junior C Ike Diogu leads the Pac-10 with 11 double-doubles and is averaging 10.2 rebounds per game. ASU has not had a player average double-digits in rebounding since Mark Landsberger (14.4) in 1976-77... Sophomore Bryson Krueger is 24-of-43 (.558) from the three-point stripe in his past 14 games and 14-of-24 (.583) in the past seven contests... Sophomore F Serge Angounou is averaging 13.5 points, 8.3 boards, is 33-of-54 (.611) from the field and 14-of-16 (.875) from the free throw line in his past six games. He also has posted his best scoring game twice in the past five outings, as he scored 20 vs. USC on Jan. 15 and at Oregon on Jan. 22 (in a career-high 35 minutes).
CALIFORNIA junior C Rod Benson averaged 18.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in a home sweep of the Oregon schools last week. He shot 14-of-24 (.583) from the floor, while adding four assists and four steals... Benson has led the Bears in rebounding in each of the last six games, averaging 9.2 boards a game during that span... For the season, Benson is averaging 13.3 point and 5.8 rebounds... Sophomore F Dominic McGuire is averaging 10.3 points, hitting 15-of-25 (.600) from the field over the last three games... During its current three-game win streak, California is shooting 88-of-172 (.512) from the field, while holding the opposition to 64-of-173 (.370) from the field. The Bears have a +6.3 rebounding margin over the last three games... Coach Ben Braun is three wins shy of reaching career victory No. 500.
OREGON has outscored its opponent in the second half in each of the last five games, but has only a 1-4 record to show for it... The Ducks travel to Oregon State for the 322nd meeting between the two schools. No two teams have played more games against one another in the NCAA. The Ducks have won 21 of the last 23 games in the Civil War... Freshman G Malik Hairston is averaging 14.4 points over the last five games, while shooting 31-of-57 (.544)... Freshman G Chamberlain Oguchi scored a career-high 12 points in a career-high tying 12 minutes at Stanford.
OREGON STATE senior F David Lucas has scored in double digits in each of the last four games, averaging 20.8 points and 7.3 rebounds over that four-game stretch... Junior F Nick DeWitz posted a career-high five blocked shots at California. It was one blocked shot shy of matching the school single-game record... The Beavers have five players averaging double digits in the scoring column - Lucas (16.9 ppg), DeWitz (12.7 ppg), freshman F Sasa Cuic (10.9 ppg), junior G Chris Stephens (10.3 ppg) and senior G J.S. Nash (10.1 ppg). OSU joins Washington as the only Pac-10 teams with five players averaging double digits.
STANFORD has won six straight Pac-10 games since starting Conference play at 0-3... Junior F Matt Haryasz had career highs of 20 points and 20 rebounds in the Cardinal win over Oregon, their 19th straight over the Ducks at Maples Pavilion... Haryasz became the eighth player in Stanford history to record 20 or more rebounds in a game. He has recorded three consecutive double-doubles and is averaging 16.3 points and 12.5 rebounds over the last four games. He is the Pac-10's second leading rebounder, averaging 8.7 boards per contest on the season, and 9.4 per game in Conference play... Stanford travels to Arizona State and Arizona this week, having won 13 straight against the Sun Devils and three in a row versus the Wildcats.
UCLA rallied from an 18-point halftime deficit to snap a four-game losing streak against USC. The Bruins have recorded four victories when rallying from a double-digit deficit during the 2005 campaign - 18 at halftime at USC, 12 in the first half at ASU, 21 in the first half vs. UW, and 17 in the first and second halves vs. WSU... Senior F Dijon Thompson helped spark the rally, collecting two steals and six points in the first 2:20 of the second half. He finished with 24 points and seven rebounds while making 8-of-11 from the floor... UCLA travels to face the Washington schools this week. The Bruins have won 11 straight at Washington State (including games in Spokane) and three straight at Washington.
USC Freshman G Nick Young continues to improve as Conference play progresses. He tied his career high with a 22-point performance against UCLA, his fourth effort of 20 points or more in nine Pac-10 contests. Young is averaging a team-high 14.7 points per game in Conference play, 12th best in the Pac-10, and best among the league's freshmen. He averaged just 8.1 ppg in 11 games of non-conference action... Fellow freshman G Gabriel Pruitt had 19 points and three steals in the contest. He leads the team and is second in the Pac-10, averaging 2.05 steals per game on the season. Pruitt is also second on the team in scoring for the year, contributing 11.8 ppg, good for 18th place league-wide.
The dimes flow freely at WASHINGTON, where senior Will Conroy and junior Nate Robinson roam the backcourt. Conroy, who averages 6.53 assists per game, is the Pac-10's leader, while Robinson, who contributes 5.20 apg, is the Conference's No. 2 distributor. With 420 career assists, Conroy is 46 assists behind Husky career leader Chester Dorsey, who dished out 466 dimes between 1974 and 1977... Coach Lorenzo Romar hopes to break Washington's slump against UCLA, whom the Huskies have not beaten during the regular season since 2001 (they defeated the Bruins 91-83 at last year's Pac-10 Tournament). Romar was an assistant at UCLA from 1993-96, during which time the Huskies defeated the Bruins just once.
WASHINGTON STATE celebrated its first win over Arizona in its last 39 tries with a 70-63 win in Tucson. The previous time the Cougars defeated the Wildcats was Jan. 30, 1986, in Pullman. They had not defeated Arizona in the desert since Jan. 14, 1984. The victory also snapped a 48-game losing streak against ranked opponents, dating back to an 89-87 win over No. 25 California on Feb. 22, 1997. Washington State outscored Arizona 25-12 over the games final 9:22, and the 70 points it scored was the most it has put up in regulation this season. Arizona's 63 points was its fewest in nine Conference games - the Wildcats had averaged a league-leading 83.8 ppg in Pac-10 play entering the contest... Second year head coach Dick Bennett seems to have a penchant for making history - the Cougars snapped losing streaks of 22 and nine versus UCLA and USC (their opponents this week), respectively, during the 2003-04 season.
