ARIZONA SCHOOLS PAY STANFORD A VISIT
One Game Separates League's Middle-of-Pac Teams
Just one game separates the five teams occupying the Pac-10's third- through sixth-place spots heading into the final four weeks of the regular season... `Tight around the middle' might be an understatement... Following first-place Stanford (19-2, 10-1) and second-place USC (14-6, 8-3), the Conference race locks up... Third-place ARIZONA (15-6 overall, 7-3 Pac-10), with a half-game lead over OREGON (14-6, 7-4) and UCLA (13-7, 7-4), owns a slim a one-game margin on sixth-place ARIZONA STATE (14-6, 6-4)... As teams jockey for position in the State Farm Pac-10 Tournament, the top six slots in the Pac-10 standings become even more coveted... The first- through sixth-place teams avoid the tournament's Friday night play-in games, between the No. 7 and 10 seeds, and No. 8 and 9 seeds... Winners of 10 in a row and 33 consecutive Pac-10 home games, the Cardinal play host to the Wildcats and Sun Devils this week, with Saturday's Stanford-ASU matchup to be televised live on FSN... Down in Los Angeles, USC and UCLA host the Washington schools... The Bruins and Huskies will battle on Super Bowl Sunday, in a live FSN telecast at 1 p.m... The Civil War moves back to Eugene on Saturday, when the Ducks will try for their 10th home win of the season.
In the latest RPI power ratings listed by College Basketball News and the WBCA/Summerville report, respectively, six Pac-10 teams are ranked among the top 60 -- Stanford (9th, 10th), Arizona State (21st, 21st), Arizona (25th, 26th), USC (37th, 38th), Oregon (44th, 42nd) and UCLA (52nd, 48th)... With just one regular-season non-conference tilt remaining on the docket, Pac-10 teams post a combined record of 63-32 (.663) against non-league foes in 2004-05.

CONFERENCE RPI: Through games as of Jan. 30, 2005, the WBCA/Summerville RPI ranks the top six conferences as follows: 1. ACC, 2. SEC, 3. Pac-10, 4. Big 12, 5. Big Ten, 6. Big East.
ARIZONA WILDCATS: The Wildcats are 13-0 this season when outrebounding their opponents... Arizona is just 2-5 when being outrebounded, after surrendering a 50-34 edge on the glass to No. 20/22 Maryland in an overtime loss on Jan. 29... Over the weekend, JR C Shawntinice Polk moved into fourth place on the UA all-time scoring list, with 1,344 career points... With her final block in the Maryland game, Polk became the first Wildcat to pass the 200-blocks mark... With 201 career swats, she is tied for fifth with Val Whiting (Stanford, 1989-93) on the Pac-10 all-time chart... Polk also moved into the Pac-10's career top-20 in rebounding last week... With 829 boards, she is 19th.
ARIZONA STATE SUN DEVILS: With a pair of three-pointers last week at Arizona, SR G Kylan Loney set the ASU record for career three-pointers made (135)... This week's trip to Stanford and California ends a three-game road stretch for the Sun Devils... ASU is in the midst of a stretch of five of seven games on the road... ASU is giving up just 52.0 points per game which ranks first in the Pac-10 and eighth in the nation in scoring defense... JR F Kristen Kovesdy is shooting a league-best 61.9 percent from the field this season (96-of-155)... At that pace, she will set the school single-season record for field goal percentage... Monique Ambers holds the ASU single-season mark, shooting 58.8 percent from the field in 1992-93 (142-of-243).
CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS: Cal returns home to Haas Pavilion this week where it will try to snap a seven-game losing streak... Five of the seven losses have been by 11 points or less and the last four have occurred after the Bears held halftime leads... Prior to the last four games, Cal was 6-0 on the season when leading at the half... The Bears rank fifth in the Pac-10 in scoring (68.1 ppg), which is on track to be the program's highest scoring average since the 1995-96 team averaged 71.8 points per game... SR F Leigh Gregory leads Cal in scoring at 12.5 points per game and has a team-high 13 double-figure scoring games on the year.
OREGON DUCKS: The Ducks conclude their three-game homestand by hosting Oregon State Saturday night... Coming off a home sweep of UCLA and USC, Oregon is 9-1 at home this season, and improved its Pac-10 record at McArthur Court to 6-0 this season... SR F Cathrine Kraayeveld (1,014 career points) scored her 1,000th career point during the win over USC on Jan. 29, finishing with 22 points and 11 rebounds for her seventh double-double this season... Over its last two games, Oregon has a combined rebounding margin of 18.0 boards per game... SR G Brandi Davis notched a career-high 28 points in the win over UCLA on Jan. 27... With Kraayeveld and SR C Andrea Bills in the starting lineup at Mac Court, Oregon is 25-3.
OREGON STATE BEAVERS: Last weekend marked the first time in the last four years that Oregon State has not opened the second half of Pac-10 play with a victory... In the loss to USC on Jan. 27, four Beavers reached double figures in scoring -- the first time since the season opener three or more players have done so... Oregon State plays a mid-week non-conference tilt against Utah Valley State before heading to Eugene for Saturday's Civil War matchup... In the series with the Ducks, the home team has prevailed in five of the last six contests, the lone exception being Oregon's win at OSU earlier this season.
STANFORD CARDINAL: Winners of 10 straight, the Cardinal lost a pair of players to injuries last weekend... SO F Eziamaka Okafor suffered a torn right Achilles tendon Jan. 27 in the win over Washington, bringing her season to an end... FR G Jessica Elway is out for an undetermined amount of time after breaking her right hand during practice Jan. 28 in Spokane... SR G Kelley Suminski shot a combined 40 percent from beyond the arc (6-of-15) over the weekend, in road wins at Washington and WSU... Stanford's 69 points at WSU was its lowest scoring output since notching 68 points at Arizona State on Jan. 7... The Cardinal swept the Arizona schools in the desert Jan. 7 and 9, the first Pac-10 team to do so in five years, since Oregon and UCLA accomplished the feat in 1999-2000.
UCLA BRUINS: JR G Lisa Willis has connected on 43 percent of her three-point field goals in the last five games (19-of-44)... JR G Nikki Blue posted her second double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 assists in the Jan. 30 win at Oregon State... Over the last seven contests -- four of which the Bruins have been without leading scorer and rebounder SO G Noelle Quinn -- Blue is averaging 17.7 points, 6.4 assists and 5.6 rebounds per game, more than four points above her season scoring average (13.5 ppg)... UCLA will try for its first season sweep of both Washington schools since 1999-2000 this week, after downing the Cougars and Huskies last month on the road... UCLA has won six of the last seven against UW in Pauley Pavilion.
USC WOMEN OF TROY: USC will put its 4-0 Pac-10 home record (7-1 overall) to another test this week as Washington and Washington State visit Troy... The Trojans have dropped two of the last three against the Huskies in Los Angeles, but defeated UW 62-52 last month in Seattle... FR G Brynn Cameron averaged 11.5 points on 50 percent shooting (10-of-20) in a road split with the Oregon schools last week... Cameron ranks second in the Pac-10 in three-point field goal percentage (.457), and trails only Stanford's Kelley Suminski in three-point attempts (94 to 95) among players in the top 10... JR G Meghan Gnekow paces the squad on the boards and ranks 10th in the Pac-10, at 5.5 per game.
WASHINGTON HUSKIES: The Huskies have shot 40 percent or better from the field in three of their last five games, including a season-high 53 percent (29-of-54) in the Jan. 29 win over California... Until the Jan. 13 game at Oregon, Washington had not shot better than 40 percent from the field in any of its previous games this season, and UW has since logged two games above 50.0 percent... Washington's 80 points against Cal were a season-high for the Huskies in Pac-10 games, and well above their season scoring average of 65.9 points per game... SO F Jill Bell notched a season-high 17 points against the Bears, her third straight game in double figures in scoring and 10th on the season... Bell leads the team in shooting, with a 42 percent clip (83-of-200).
WASHINGTON STATE COUGARS: SO F Kate Benz tallied her second consecutive double-double -- and her fifth in the last six games -- in the Cougars' 13-point loss to Stanford on Jan. 29... Benz tied her season-high with 15 rebounds vs. the Cardinal and scored 10 points to post her Pac-10-leading eighth double-double of the year... Over the last six games, Benz is averaging 12.0 points and 11.8 rebounds per contest... The 13-point margin of defeat was the narrowest between Stanford and WSU since the Cougars dropped an 87-78 decision to the Cardinal at Pullman, on Feb. 22, 2001... The 69 points were the fewest allowed to the Cardinal by WSU since Jan. 27, 1996, when Stanford scored 66.
