Softball Plays Six Off-Campus Home Games This Week
Feb. 1, 2005
After a doubleheader sweep of UCSB to open the 2005 season on Sunday, the Bruins will play host to UC Riverside and the fourth annual Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament, both at off-campus sites due to the Easton Stadium renovation project, this week. Wednesday's single game against UCR will take place at Bill Barber Park in Irvine, Calif., while the Winsberg Tournament will be played at Mayfair Park in Lakewood, Calif.
UCLA Sweeps UC Santa Barbara in Sunday Doubleheader
The Bruins started their 2005 season in style on Sunday with a doubleheader sweep of UC Santa Barbara. Two freshmen had particularly impressive debut performances on the day, as Krista Colburn went 7-for-7 with a triple, a home run a stolen base, three runs scored and four RBIs in the two games. In game two, freshman pitcher Anjelica Selden struck out the side in the first and third innings, K'd eight of the first 10 Gauchos to step to the plate, and finished with 14 strikeouts in the 9-1 Bruin victory. Also notable: sophomore Jodie Legaspi homered once in each game, and as a team UCLA hit four triples in the doubleheader, one more than the team's total for the 2004 season (3).
Enquist Needs One Win for 800
Following UCLA's doubleheader sweep of UCSB to open the 2005 season, UCLA head coach Sue Enquist needs just one more victory to become the 21st NCAA softball coach and 12th active Division I coach with 800 career victories. That milestone win could occur as early as Wednesday afternoon when the Bruins play UC Riverside in Irvine, Calif.
Who Was Stacy Winsberg?
This weekend's tournament is named in honor of former UCLA softball player Stacy Winsberg. Winsberg, who served as strength and conditioning coach for the U.S. Women's Softball National Team at the 1999 Pan American Games and the 2000 Olympics, passed away on the morning of Dec. 12, 2002, from a cerebral blood clot. Winsberg had been battling lung cancer since early that fall. Please see page 90 of the UCLA Softball media guide for a full bio on Stacy Winsberg.
Junior All-American Caitlin Benyi did not play on Sunday at UCSB and is not expected to play against UC Riverside on Wednesday due to a stress fracture of a bone spur in her right foot. Her status will be re-evaluated later this week.
UCLA vs. UC Riverside
UCLA is 16-1 all-time against the Highlanders, and the Bruins have not lost to UCR since the 1976 season. Most recently, the Bruins swept a doubleheader at UCR early in the 2003 season.
UCLA vs. Georgia
The Bruins won the only previous meeting between the two schools with a 2-1 eight-inning win over the Bulldogs at the NCAA Regional held in Columbia, S.C., on May 18, 2002. The teams were scheduled to meet at the 2004 Palm Springs Classic, but the game was rained out. This season, the Bruins and Bulldogs are scheduled to play four times with three games at the Winsberg Tournament this weekend and a fourth at the Campbell Cartier Classic in San Diego on Feb. 18.
UCLA vs. Cal State Fullerton
The all-time series between the Titans and Bruins is tied at 29-29-1 with the Bruins winning the last three meetings between the two teams. This season, UCLA and Cal State Fullerton are scheduled to play three times, twice at the Winsberg Tournament as well as a single game at CSUF on March 29.
Easton Stadium Renovation *Alternate Home Sites
UCLA Softball's on-campus facility, Easton Stadium, is currently being renovated to provide fans with approximately 1,300 chair-back seats. The project is currently underway and the Bruins are aiming to return to campus for a Mar. 15 match-up with the Texas Longhorns.
