Three Golden Bears Named to Player of the Year Watch List
Feb. 1, 2005
Cal third baseman Vicky Galindo and pitchers Kristina Thorson and Kelly Anderson were named to the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year watch list, as announced by the Amateur Softball Association Jan. 28. Cal was just one of three schools (Arizona, UCLA) to have three players named.
The award, the Heisman Trophy of college softball, recognizes outstanding athletic achievement by collegiate softball players in the U.S. This year's watch list is comprised of 40 players representing 23 colleges and 10 conferences. A list of 10 finalists for the award will be released May 10 with the 4th annual recipient to be named at the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City (June 2-6).
Galindo (Union City, Calif.) became one of the most decorated Bears in program history in 2004 after leading Cal in batting average (.374), hits (83), doubles (18), triples (2), stolen bases (23) and total bases (126). The senior was named Louisville Slugger/NFCA and Easton First Team All-American and selected to the WCWS All-Tournament Team, NCAA Tournament Region 5 Team, NFCA All-Pacific Region Team and Second Team Pac-10.
In 2004, Thorson (28-4) and Anderson (25-9) became just the second Cal duo to post 20-plus victories in a season. Thorson, a junior from Lake Forest Park, Wash., finished third in the Pac-10 with a 0.87 ERA in being named a Louisville Slugger/NFCA Second Team All-American, Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Region 5 Tournament and First Team All-Pac-10. Anderson, a senior from Woodland, Calif., was named to the WCWS All-Tournament Team after going 2-1 with a 1.47 ERA. She was a 2004 Honorable Mention Pac-10 selection.
The No. 1 Golden Bears open the 2005 season against San Jose State on Sat., Feb. 5. First pitch at Levine-Fricke in Berkeley is scheduled for 12 noon.
