Feb. 2, 2005
Bruins Head to USTA/ITA National Team Indoors . . .
UCLA (3-0) is seeded third at this week's USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Women's Tennis Championships hosted by the University of Wisconsin. The Bruins will meet unseeded Miami in the first round this Thursday at 3:00 p.m. (CST). Should they win, they will face the winner of No. 6 Duke and Texas A&M in the quarterfinals on Friday. Stanford is the top-seeded team. UCLA, which has been in the finals twice in the 17-year history of the event (1990 and 1995), has never won the title. More information about the tournament can be found at the ITA's website: www.itatennis.com.
UCLA Begins the Season 3-0 . . .
Following a 6-1 decision over LMU in its season opener two weeks ago, UCLA posted two more victories last week to move to 3-0 on the year. The Bruins registered their first shutout of the season, knocking off UC Irvine, 7-0 on Jan. 27. UCLA followed that up with a 5-2 win over No. 37 Pepperdine two days later despite playing without No. 1 player Daniela Bercek. Freshman Riza Zalameda stepped up admirably in Bercek's absence, defeating Pepperdine's Natalie Braverman, 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 1 position.
Bruins Remain at No. 4 Nationally . . .
UCLA remained at No. 4 in the country in this week's ITA National Team Rankings released on Feb. 1. Defending NCAA Champion Stanford is No. 1, followed by No. 2 Florida and No. 3 Clemson. Northwestern rounds out the top-5 behind UCLA. Individually, freshman Riza Zalameda checks in at No. 9 in singles and is followed by No. 20 Daniela Bercek, No. 122 Alex McGoodwin and No. 125 Elizabeth Lumpkin. In doubles, Bercek and Zalameda are ranked fifth. New individual rankings will not be released again until Feb. 22.
Gordon Returns to Lineup . . .
Bruin junior Laura Gordon made a successful return to the lineup against Pepperdine last week after missing the first two matches of the season due to injury. Gordon, who was only expected to play doubles against the Waves until Daniela Bercek was scratched from the lineup with an illness, posted a straight-set victory at No. 6 singles. She also teamed with partner Elizabeth Lumpkin at No. 2 doubles, winning that match as well. Gordon was an all-tournament selection at last season's NCAA Championships.
Zalameda Among Nation's Elite . . .
Freshman Riza Zalameda is one of only five players in the nation who are currently ranked in the top-10 in both the ITA Singles and Doubles Rankings. Zalameda is ranked No. 9 in singles and No. 5 in doubles with sophomore Daniela Bercek. Other players who have top-10 rankings in both areas are Northwestern's Audra Cohen (1s, 1d), Miami's Megan Bradley (2s, 8d), Northwestern's Cristelle Grier (4s, 1d) and Kentucky's Aibika Kalsarieva (7s, 6d). Zalameda and Cohen are the only freshmen on the list.
Head Coach Stella Sampras Webster . . .
Stella Sampras Webster is in her ninth season as head coach at UCLA, owning an overall record of 136-77 (.638). In her eight seasons in Westwood, the Bruins have finished in the top-10 at the NCAA Championships seven times, including a trip to the finals in 2004.
