Soccer Signs Four Student-Athletes

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Fifth year women's head soccer coach Ray Leone announced Wednesday that four student-athletes have officially signed National Letters of Intent to study at Arizona State University and compete for the Sun Devil soccer program. The class includes two players with high-level international experience from Mexico and Iceland, as well as two players from the Pacific Northwest.


'Overall this is another exciting class for ASU,' says Leone. 'We are very eager to have all of these fine student-athletes join the Sun Devil family. The four student-athletes we have signed are very adaptable players. Each player brings a unique flavor that will add a great deal to our program.' 


'Like we have accomplished in past years, we recruited young women of strong character and athletic talent. They are expected to make a big contribution to next year's team and beyond.'



Christine Nieva -- Midfielder/Forward

Mesquite, Texas (North Mesquite HS)

- Mexican Women's National Team

- Three international appearances against the U.S. Women's National Team

- U-19 Mexican National Team

- Competed in the 2004 CONCACAF Tournament in Canada

- Club Team: Dallas Sting '87 Royal

- Region III Champions in 2002 and 2003

- Finished third at the U.S. Club National Championships in 2002 and 2003

Bjorg Thordardottir -- Defender/Midfielder

Keflavik, Iceland (Kvennaskolinn in Reykjavik HS)

- Icelandic Women's National Team

- Competed against the U.S. Women's National Team during their 2004 Gold Medal Tour

- U-21 Icelandic Women's National Team

- Competed in the 2004 Nordic Cup (Same event that current ASU player Manya Makoski competed in with the U-21 U.S. Women's National Team)

- Interested in studying history and/or anthropology at ASU

Brooke Simons -- Defender/Midfielder

Seattle, Washington (Kings HS)

- 2003 Washington state ODP Team

- 2003 Regional Camp

- Club Team: Northwest National Volante

- Interested in studying graphic design at ASU


 'Brooke brings a physicality that we really need in our program. I believe Brooke has a lot of upside potential once she commits to one sport at the college level.'



Alex Dunsdon -- Defender/Midfielder

Seattle, Washington (Meadowdale HS)

- 2004-05 Adidas All-America Scholar Soccer team

- 2004 Nominee for Wendy's High School Heisman Award

- Club Team: Northwest National Volante

- 2004 team captain for Meadowdale High School

- Interested in studying astronomy and/or physics at ASU, and hopes to one day work for NASA
