Third-Seeded Bruins Upset at Team Indoors
Feb. 3, 2005
Madison, Wisc. - The fourth-ranked UCLA women's tennis team suffered its first setback of the 2005 season Thursday, falling to No. 12 Miami, 4-3 in first-round action at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors hosted by the University of Wisconsin. The third-seeded Bruins (3-1) move into the consolation portion of the tournament and will face No. 16 Texas A&M on Friday at 9:00 a.m. (CST).
With the dual match tied at 3-3, Miami pulled off the upset when Audrey Banada posted a 6-4, 7-6(4) victory over senior Sarah Gregg at the No. 4 position.
Although the Bruins started the day well by claiming the doubles point with wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions, the Hurricanes quickly answered back once singles play began. In what was supposed to be the marquee matchup of the afternoon at the No. 1 position, UCLA's Daniela Bercek, ranked 20th in the country, was forced to withdraw from her match against second-ranked Megan Bradley. Bercek was down 3-0 in the first set when she retired due to injury.
UCLA's Riza Zalameda and Laura Gordon each posted straight-set wins in the loss. Zalameda, ranked ninth nationally, defeated Staci Stevens, 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 2 position. Gordon was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Emily Mowery at No. 6 singles.
