18th-Ranked Huskies Blank Gophers, 4-0

Feb. 4, 2005

SEATTLE, Wash. - Washington's men's tennis team had a successful first day as host of the Great Northwest Shootout, earning a 4-0 victory over the 43rd-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. The tournament style of play halts the match once one team reaches four points, and the No. 18 Huskies (5-0) picked up the doubles point and three wins in singles to finish off Minnesota (0-2).

The Huskies made quick work of the Gophers in doubles action, taking the second and third doubles matches to win the point. Sophomore Daniel Chu and senior Peter Scharler earned an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles, quickly followed by freshman Andy Kuharszky and sophomore Alex Slovic's 8-2 win at No. 3. It was the first dual match action of the year for Slovic who has been recovering from a rib injury.

Scharler netted the Huskies another point at No. 5 singles, defeating Minnesota's Brian Lipinski, 6-1, 6-4. With the Huskies leading or tied on all remaining courts, it was just a matter of who would get credit for the wins. Chu came through at No. 3 singles, handling Adrien Debreyne, 6-3, 7-5. Moments later, sophomore Mike Ricks ended the match via his 6-4, 6-2 win in the sixth singles spot. Ricks was seeing his first singles action in dual play so far this season and started slow, trailing 1-4 in the first set before rallying for five straight games to win the set.

In the day's earlier match, 17th-ranked Tulane pulled off a tense 4-3 upset win over No. 11 Ohio State. With the match tied at 3-3, Tulane's Ted Angelinos prevailed in a third-set tiebreak over Ohio State's Scott Green in the fourth singles position.

The winner of the Great Northwest Shootout will be determined based on win-loss percentage. In the eventuality of a tie, head-to-head results will be the deciding factor.

On Saturday, Tulane and Minnesota will square off at noon, followed by the Huskies and Ohio State at 4 p.m. The tournament ends with Washington facing Tulane on Sunday, Feb. 6 at 1:30 p.m.
