Beavers Lose at No. 6 Oklahoma, 35-6

Feb. 4, 2005

NORMAN, Okla. - Oregon State 157-pounder Tony Hook and 165-pounder Matt Ellis earned wins Friday night but the Beavers were beaten by No. 6 Oklahoma 35-6 in non-league wrestling at the Lloyd Noble Center. OSU 174-pounder Jeremy Larson and 184-pounder Dan Pitsch dropped close decisions to nationally-ranked wrestlers.

OSU (9-7-1 overall, 4-2-1 Pacific-10) wraps up its weekend with a dual at unbeaten No. 1 Oklahoma State on Saturday at 3 p.m. PST.

Against Oklahoma (13-4, 0-2 Big 12), the Beavers managed a split of the first four matches but the two Sooner wins were by pin. OU then won the rest of the night's matches.

'We had opportunities to win some of those matches, but we came up short,' OSU head coach Joe Wells said. 'They've got some top-ranked guys in their lineup, and it was a good opportunity for us.'

Hook won for the seventh time in his last 10 matches to improve to 9-7 this season with a 7-3 decision over Jerome Featherstone.

'Tony did a great job,' Wells said. 'He went out and pressed the pace, he was aggressive and he forced the action. The guy tried to throw Tony, but Tony took him straight to his back. He got the lead early, then he did a good job of managing the match against a good athlete.

Ellis improved to 8-2 this season with a 2-1 decision over the Sooners' Randy Sulaver. Larson stayed within 9-6 of Oklahoma's E.K. Waldhaus, ranked ninth nationally by Amateur Wrestling News, while Pitsch was edged 8-6 by OU's Justin Dyer, ranked 15th by AWN.
