Beavers Squander Pitching Performance

Feb. 4, 2005

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State pitcher Nate Fogle retired 14 hitters in a row at one point but Gonzaga made a pair of early runs stand up for a 3-1 baseball win Friday afternoon in the Bob Schaefer Memorial Tournament at Packard Stadium. Each team finished with six hits, but the Beavers (1-1 overall) left eight runners on base and lined into a pair of double plays.

OSU continues the tourney against New Mexico State on Saturday at 6 p.m. PST and wraps it up on Sunday at 1 p.m. PST against ninth-ranked host Arizona State. Both games can be heard on www.osubeavers.com

Against Gonzaga (1-0), the Beavers found a lot tougher going than they had in Thursday night's 19-0 win over NMSU. OSU had its opportunities against Bulldog righthander Josh Monroe and three relievers but couldn't cash in beyond an eighth-inning run.

'We hit some balls good and they happened to be in the right place, but we magnified the problem because we got doubled off,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'We didn't do the little things in baseball that could have helped us get through a day when we didn't swing the bats well. We got good pitching, we played defense, but we didn't execute enough to win.

'You're not going to swing it every day, but when you're not, you've got to be willing to do those things that help your club win, and we didn't do those things so we lost a game I feel like we could have won ... I feel like it was a wasted pitching performance, because I felt the pitching was very good and we defended well.'

Fogle, a junior righthander from Mt. Hood Community College, had a first inning in which he gave up a pair of doubles, two wild pitches, a sacrifice fly and a hit batter to fall behind 2-0. But after that hit batter, he struck out Shawn Wayt to start his string of 14 straight outs, which lasted until Fogle was removed with one out in the sixth inning.

'I just settled down - I finally realized I could pitch,' said Fogle, who walked none and struck out seven in his 5 1/3 innings of work. 'I made some adjustments and coach talked to me, and everything went well after that.'

It just turned out to be the wrong day to give up a couple of early runs.

'It would have been nice,' Fogle said of winning. 'But that's my job, to give my team a chance to win and that's what I wanted to do.'

After Fogle left the game in the bottom of the sixth, the Bulldogs used a hit batter, two hits and an error with two out to score an unearned run and make it 3-0 against OSU reliever Daniel Turpen.

OSU finally broke through in the top of the eighth inning after Tyler Graham led of with a fly to short centerfield that GU second baseman Scott Campbell dropped for a two-base error. Canham followed with a run-scoring single to left, and Jacoby Ellsbury walked to put the tying runs on base with none out.

Mike Lissman grounded into a fielder's choice that left runners at first and third with one out, then Chris Campos lined a ball toward leftfield but Gonzaga shortstop Aaron McGuinness was able to glove it for the second out. Canham had broken for the plate, and McGuinness' throw doubled him off third to end the inning.

Ellsbury was 2-for-3 with a double on the day, making him 5-for-7 for the season, and he stole third base as part of an OSU threat in the fourth inning. Ellsbury's stolen base was the 35th of his career, moving him into OSU's career top 10 in that category. Ellsbury is now tied for ninth place with Quinn Williams (1983-86) and Jason Stranberg (1996-98).

Darwin Barney was also 2-for-4 for the Beavers.
