Cal Baseball Loses to UC Irvine, 10-1

Feb. 4, 2005

BERKELEY, CA - Senior James Holder gave the Golden Bears (0-2) their lone run with a pinch-hit homer in the eighth inning, as the California baseball team fell to UC Irvine (1-0), 10-1, Friday at Evans Diamond. Cal struggled offensively, gathering only six hits off of Anteater pitchers Chris Nicoll (1-0, 6.0 innings, three hits, two walks, three strikeouts) and Nash Robertson (save, 3.0 innings, three hits, one run, no walks, four strikeouts).

The losing pitcher for the Bears was junior starter Adam Gold, who went 5.7 innings with nine hits, seven runs, one walk and three strikeouts. UC Irvine scored its first run in the top of the first on a solo homer by Mark Wagner, and then tacked on two runs in the third, a run in the fourth, three runs in the sixth, a run in the seventh and two runs in the top of the ninth. Wagner finished the day 2-for-5 with two RBI, while R.J. Brown, Chad Lundahl and Brett Dalton also had two hits apiece for the Anteaters. Tim Stewart added a two-run pinch-hit home run in the ninth inning and Jaime Martinez had a two-run single in the fourth and a RBI ground out in the sixth.

Besides Holder's homer, Cal got singles from Allen Craig, Mike Van Winden, Chris Errecart, Matt Einspahr and Stephen Carlson. It was the second time Holder had produced as a pinch-hitter this season, as he had a RBI single in the eighth inning Tuesday versus Pacific.

A highlight for the Bears on the mound was reliever Alex Trafton striking out two of the three batters he faced in the eighth inning.

Cal will next host UC Irvine in the second game of the three-game series at Evans Diamond, Saturday, Feb. 5 at 1 p.m.
