Cardinal Softball Shuts Out Santa Clara 9-0

Centerfielder Catalina Morris homered twice to lead the No. 5 Stanford softball team to a 9-0 shutout over Santa Clara to open the 2005 season at the Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium this afternoon. The Cardinal are now 1-0 while the Broncos drop to 1-2 on the year.

Stanford got things started in the bottom of the first inning when Anna Beardman singled up the middle to score Lauren Lappin who had doubled earlier. The Cardinal picked up another run in the bottom of the third when Morris hit a solo shot to centerfield.

Stanford scored four runs in the fourth as Becky McCullough doubled up the middle to score pinch runner Shoney Hixson. McCullough then scored on a single by Tricia Aggabao. Catalina Morris hit her second homerun of the game to make the score 6-0.

The Cardinal scored three more in the fifth. Heather Shook singled to left to score Beardman. Aggabao singled with the bases loaded, scoring Leah Nelson and Shook.

Pitcher Laura Severson (1-0) picked up the win in the circle, allowing only one hit over four innings of work with two strikeouts. Becky McCullough pitched one scoreless inning for the Cardinal as well.

Stanford is back in action tomorrow when they take on Santa Clara at 2 p.m. and Pacific at 4 p.m.
