Cougars Lose To UCLA In OT Heartbreaker, 58-56

PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) - Dijon Thompson scored 24 points, including a 3-pointerat the buzzer in regulation and the game-winning basket in overtime, to leadUCLA to a 58-56 win over Washington State on Thursday night.

Thompson's 18-foot jumper with 40.8 seconds left in overtime snapped a56-all tie. The Cougars missed two shots under heavy defensive pressure in thefinal seven seconds, including a 19-foot runner by Jeff Varem as time expired.

Jordan Farmar had 12 points and seven rebounds for UCLA (12-6, 6-4 Pac-10).Varem and Thomas Kelati led WSU (9-10, 4-6) with 17 points each.

The Bruins, who have won 12 consecutive games against Washington State inPullman or Spokane, needed two overtimes to beat the Cougars 80-77 on Jan. 6 inLos Angeles. WSU was 0-46 all-time at UCLA before winning last year.

Thursday's game was tightly contested throughout after WSU raced to a 9-2lead in the first five minutes, when Varem scored seven points before sittingout most of the first half with two fouls. UCLA held small leads most of thegame, but there were six lead changes and nine ties.

Kelati, who scored just two points in the first half, scored seven of WSU'snine points in the final 2:30 of regulation, including two free throws with 6.2seconds left. Kelati's 3-pointer with 1:05 left in overtime tied the game at56.

WSU shot just 40 percent from the field, 25 percent on 3-pointers and 53percent at the free-throw line. UCLA shot 44 percent from the field, 29 percenton 3-pointers and 61 percent of its free throw attempts.
