No. 9 Washington Softball Blanks IPFW, 11-0

HONOLULU-- The ninth-ranked Washington softball (2-0) team scored nine runs in the first inning against IPFW (0-3) in day-two action of the Hawaii Paradise Classic, cruising to an 11-0 mercy rule victory. Senior Kristen Rivera had five RBIs in the win, while freshman Cailtlin Noble struck out eight in her collegiate pitching debut.

The Huskies scored nine runs in the bottom of the first inning on eight hits and one error. Dominique Lastrapes and Ashley Charters led off with back-to-back singles and moved to second and third with a double steal.

Lastrapes scored on a fielder's choice by Kristen Rivera and Charters scored on a IPFW error. Sarah Hyatt kept the Husky rally going with a two-run home run to left-centerfield and Jacki Hansen followed with her first career home run over the left field fence.

Washington scored three more runs in the frame with RBI singles by Rivera and Kathy Fiske to give UW the 9-0 lead.

The Mastadons threatened in the top of the third inning, loading the bases with two hits and a Washington error. Noble worked her way out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.

Rivera tacked on two more runs for the Dawgs with a homer to left field to make the final score of 11-0. The game was called after the top of the fifth inning due to the mercy rule as Washington led by more than eight runs.

Noble (1-0) picked up her first collegiate win as she held IPFW to five hits and struck out eight.

Natalie Clark (0-1) took the loss for IPFW as she allowed six runs on four hits in one-third innings.

The remainder of the Hawaii Paradise Classic has been reformatted due to inclement weather. The tournament will be a round robin with no championship round. The Huskies will have Saturday off and will play Oregon (10 a.m.) and Hawaii (12 p.m.) on Sunday.
