OSU Comes Up With 19-0 Win On Opening Day

Feb. 3, 2005

TEMPE, Ariz. - Oregon State's Dallas Buck, Kevin Joslyn and Kurt Steele combined to strike out 13 hitters and pitch a one-hitter as the Beavers beat New Mexico State 19-0 in the baseball season-opener for both teams Thursday evening at Packard Stadium. The game at Arizona State's Bob Schaefer Memorial Tournament was called after seven innings due to a 10-run rule.

The Beavers continue the tourney against Gonzaga on Friday at 12 noon PST. Oregon State plays a rematch against NMSU on Saturday at 6 p.m. and wraps up the tournament against ninth-ranked host ASU on Sunday at 1 p.m.; all three games can be heard on www.osubeavers.com

Against the Aggies, OSU used 18 position players in the game and 10 of them had a hit, 10 had a run batted in, and 12 scored a run. Buck allowed just an infield single to start the game and struck out nine in his five innings of work, and he was in no danger after the Beavers put up eight runs in the second inning.

'It's good in that first game to get a lot of guys to play,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'Dallas pitched well, we played defense, and we started swinging the bats - we got it going and it got contagious, and everything fell. Early, we didn't hit the ball that well but we put the ball in a couple places. It's just fun to play and be able to get an early lead and see a lot of people play in the first game.'

It was the first shutout the Beavers had posted on Opening Day since 1980 in a 17-0 win over Pacific (Ore.) at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. It was the most runs OSU had scored in an opener since 1960 and a 23-1 win at Whitman. Oregon State's all-time record on Opening Day is now 67-29 and the Beavers have won 13 of their last 19 season-openers.

The Aggies' only hit was a high chopper by Vince Rodden that shortstop Darwin Barney gloved but his throw had no chance to get Rodden. Walks helped NMSU put runners at first and second with none out in both of the first two innings, but a double play in the first and three straight strikeouts in the second got Buck and the Beavers out of trouble.

After the double play in the first, Buck recorded the next six outs on strikeouts, and three of his last four outs were strikeouts as well.

'Any time you have Dallas throwing, you know you're going to get a good performance out of him,' said OSU centerfielder Jacoby Ellsbury. 'You've just got to put up a couple runs and we put up 19 behind him ... he hasn't thrown as much as some of our other guys, so maybe that's why it took him a while to get going. And once he got going, he was lights-out.'

Ellsbury and first baseman Mitch Canham were both 3-for-4 to lead Oregon State's hit parade, with Canham hitting a double and triple and driving in four runs. Designated hitter Danny Anderson and rightfielder Tyler Graham came off the bench to go 2-for-3 for OSU, and third baseman Shea McFeely was 2-for-5.

Second baseman Todd Shelton was hitless in his first OSU game, but the junior college transfer tied a school record by being hit by pitch three times; the Beavers' extensive substitutions kept him from a chance at a record-breaking fourth plunking.

Barney broke the ice in the Beavers' eight-run second inning with a run-scoring groundout. Then with two out, Canham doubled down the rightfield line to drive in two runs, Lissman doubled into the gap in left-center to drive in two more, designated hitter Joey Ledesma doubled through the right side to drive in another run, McFeely singled through the left side to drive in another and pinch-hitter Scott Nelson capped the inning with a run-scoring double into the rightfield corner.

Oregon State tacked on five more runs in the third with Anderson and Graham delivering two-run singles and Ellsbury singling home another run. Canham's two-run triple highlighted a three-run fourth inning, while sacrifice flies by Barney and Andy Jenkins and another RBI single by Ellsbury accounted for the Beavers' three runs in the fifth inning.

After Buck wrapped up his evening's work, Joslyn struck out one during a scoreless sixth inning and Steele struck out the side in the seventh.
