No. 1 California Cruises Past San Jose State in Opener
Feb. 5, 2005
BERKELEY - A trio of Golden Bear pitchers held San Jose State to one hit as the No. 1 California softball team won its 2005 season opener, 6-0, Saturday at Levine-Fricke Field.
The Bears got all the runs they would need in the third inning on a stolen base by junior leftfielder Lindsay James. The throw down to second to get James allowed senior third baseman Vicky Galindo to score from third for a 1-0 lead.
The Bears, who left the bases loaded in the first, struck for three runs in the fourth. With one out in the inning, freshman designated player Jeana Gevas singled to left field to score senior shortstop Chelsea Spencer from second. Galindo followed with a single and James plated freshman Katelyn Valenzuela - pinch running for Gevas - and Galindo on a two-out base hit.
Senior Kelly Anderson (1-0) went three scoreless innings to pick up the victory. Junior Kristina Thorson went three innings and yielded the lone Spartans hit on the afternoon - a single to Spartans centerfielder Courtney Lewis in sixth. Sophomore Sarah Adams worked a hitless seventh.
The Bears are back in action Feb. 11-13, when they compete in the Kajikawa Softball Tournament in Tempe, Ariz. Cal plays Texas A&M at 11:30 a.m. Friday and Massachusetts at 1:45 p.m.
