Oregon State Hands Defeat To Oregon, 76-72

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) - David Lucas and Nick DeWitz each had 22 points andnine rebounds as Oregon State beat Oregon 76-72 Saturday, avenging an earlierCivil War loss in Eugene.

Aaron Brooks had 21 points and Malik Hairston had 20 for the Ducks (11-8,3-7 Pacific-10) who have lost five straight conference games and now sit alonein ninth place.

The Beavers (12-9, 4-6) had been reeling since a 74-64 loss to Oregon Jan.8, dropping five of six games.

Oregon had a 36-33 rebounding advantage but 21 turnovers kept the Ducks fromcapitalizing on big plays.

The Beavers led 34-30 at the half on the strength of DeWitz's 11-point firsthalf.

Freshman Bryce Taylor pulled the Ducks into a tie, first converting athree-point play and then burying a 3-pointer to knot the game at 62.

But Chris Stephens and David Lucas both made two free throws and DeWitz hita 3 to give the Beavers a seven-point lead with 1:53 left.

Brooks was fouled by Beaver guard Lamar Hurd while shooting a 3 with twoseconds left. He made all three foul shots, but J.S. Nash hit one of two freethrows to put the game out of reach.

Stephens had 11 points for Oregon State. Jordan Kent had nine points andeight rebounds for the Ducks.
