Softball Falls to Fullerton, Downs Dawgs
Feb. 5, 2005
LAKEWOOD, CA - The third-ranked UCLA softball team (6-1) suffered its first loss of the 2005 season on Saturday afternoon in Lakewood, Calif., falling to Cal State Fullerton by a score of 4-3. The Bruins were able to rebound, however, to defeat No. 10 Georgia by a 6-0 score in the final game of the day at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament. In the first game of the day, Georgia defeated Cal State Fullerton by a score of 6-2.
In UCLA's first game of the day, Cal State Fullerton struck first and scored a run in the bottom of the second inning. Ashley Van Boxmeer was hit by a Lisa Dodd pitch, went to second on a ground-out and came home on an RBI single by Marissa Marzan.
The Bruins put up a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead. The inning opened on a Lisa Dodd single, and Dodd was able to take an extra base on the play thanks to an outfield error. After a Jodie Legaspi walk, Emily Zaplatosch loaded the bases on a single up the middle. A Kristen Dedmon fielders choice led to the first out of the inning being recorded at the plate, but the bases remained loaded for freshman Krista Colburn who connected on a two-RBI single to give the Bruins the lead after three and a half innings of play.
Unfortunately for UCLA, the Titans countered in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Candice Baker was hit by a pitch and stole second, Van Boxmeer singled giving Cal State Fullerton runners on the corners with one out, at which time the Titans executed a successful double steal play to tie the game at 2-2, and the Titans would take the lead on a two-RBI single by Ashlee Weatherford.
UCLA was able to cut the lead to one run in the fifth inning, scoring on an Andrea Duran triple followed by an RBI single by Lisa Dodd, but the rally was not enough and the Bruins suffered their first loss of the young season.
Lisa Dodd took the loss in the circle and is now 3-1 on the season. She struck out two batters and did not issue a walk in the game.
Following the loss, the Bruins had a quick turnaround before starting the final scheduled game of the day against 10th-ranked Georgia. The Bruins batted as the home team and opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning as Emily Zaplatosch drew a leadoff walk followed by a home run, the second of the season for Kristen Dedmon.
Another run was added in the third inning when Andrea Duran led off with a double, was sacrificed to third by Dodd and was hit home by Zaplatosch.
Three additional runs were tacked on in the bottom of the sixth as UCLA loaded the bases after a Krista Colburn single, an Ashley Herrera fielders choice with Colburn safe at second, and a hit-by-pitch to Tara Henry. Caitlin Benyi, who had not participated in UCLA's first five games of the season due to injury, then stepped in and connected on a two-RBI single, scoring Colburn and Herrera and advancing to second base on the throw to the plate. Henry would score as well on an RBI single by Duran to give the Bruins a 6-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Anjelica Selden continued her dominance of Bulldog batters, striking out 14 with no walks in a three-hit shutout. Selden, who is now 3-0 with a save for the season, has struck out double-figure batters in all of her three starts this season.
The Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament concludes on Sunday morning with a 9 pm game between Cal State Fullerton and Georgia, followed by the Titans and Bruins scheduled for an 11:30 am first pitch. The games will be played at Mayfair Park/Lisa Fernandez Field in Lakewood, Calif.
