Final Stats

LAKEWOOD, CA - In the first two games of the fourth annual Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament, the UCLA softball team swept a doubleheader from Georgia with scores of 4-3 (8 innings) and 7-0. The Bruins are now 5-0 on the young season, while Georgia opens 0-2 on the year. The tournament is being played at Mayfair Park/Lisa Fernandez Field in Lakewood, Calif., due to the ongoing renovation of UCLA's Easton Stadium.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the teams traded zeroes until Georga put up two runs in the top of the fifth inning on a pair of RBI walks.

The Bruins would not counter until the bottom of the seventh inning when pinch-hitter Jaisa Creps led off the inning with a single through the left side of the Bulldog infield. With Alissa Eno running the bases for Creps, Ashley Herrera reached on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt, advancing Eno to third base. Andrea Duran then singled, scoring Eno to bring the Bruins within a run at 2-1. After Tara Henry grounded out to advance Duran to second base, Lisa Dodd came through with a clutch double to left field, scoring Duran to tie the game at 2-2.

With the International Tiebreak Rule placing a runner at second base to begin the top of the eighth inning, the Bulldogs advanced Megan McAllister to third on a single by Michelle Green. McAllister would score on a groundout by Kasi Carroll to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead after the top of the eighth.

In the bottom of the frame, Jodie Legaspi started the inning on second base for the Bruins and came around to score on a double to center field by Emily Zaplatosch, tying the game at 3-3. With Zaplatosch on second, Kristen Dedmon walked before Krista Colburn grounded into a fielders choice with Zaplatosch out at third base. Whitney Holum then pinch-hit and doubled down the left field line, scoring Dedmon to win the game 4-3.

Lisa Dodd earned her third win of the season, striking out two in the game. Offensively, no Bruin had more than one hit or RBI.

Between games, the mayor of Lakewood and other local dignitaries, including three-time Olympic Gold Medalist and former UCLA All-American Lisa Fernandez, were on hand for the dedication ceremony for a new scoreboard beyond the centerfield fence.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Bruins batted as the visiting team and loaded the bases in the top of the first inning but were unable to score. In the third, Duran led off the inning with a three-base error by Georgia's right fielder. An infield single by Tara Henry gave the Bruins runners on the corners and Henry was able to steal second base before an RBI single from Jodie Legaspi gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead. Emily Zaplatosch would then step in and single home Henry for the 2-0 Bruin lead after two and a half innings.

In the fifth, the Bruin offense was efficient, leading off with a single by Lisa Dodd, who was replaced by pinch runner Eno, but the additional speed on the basepaths would not matter as Legaspi connected on a booming home run over the centerfield fence to double the Bruin lead to 4-0.

A fifth run came across for the Bruins in the sixth inning as Ashley Herrera connected on her second home run of the season, bouncing the ball high off of the 30+ foot high fence in left field. Ground rules for the field dictated that a ball hitting that high on the fence is a home run.

The top of the seventh inning saw a two-out rally by the Bruins as Krista Colburn had a two-out single but took two extra bases on an outfield error by the Bulldogs. Colburn then came home on an RBI triple by Jaisa Creps, who would score on an Ashley Herrera single to complete the scoring with a 7-0 UCLA advantage.

Meanwhile, freshman pitcher Anjelica Selden pitched a five-hit shutout for the Bruins, striking out 13 without issuing a walk. Selden recorded all three outs of the second and seventh innings via strikeout around Bulldog baserunners, as well as striking out all three batters she faced in the fourth inning. It is her second double-figure strikeout game in as many complete-game outings. Selden is now 2-0 on the 2005 season.

The Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament continues on Saturday at Mayfair Park/Lisa Fernandez Field in Lakewood, Calif. Saturday's action will begin at 10 am when Georgia takes on Cal State Fullerton. The Titans will then face UCLA at 12:30 pm, and the Bruins and Bulldogs will take to the field at 3 pm. Tournament action concludes with two games on Sunday morning: Cal State Fullerton vs. Georgia at 9 am and UCLA vs. Cal State Fullerton at 11:30 am.
