USC Holds On For 73-68 Win Over Washington

LOS ANGELES - The USC women's basketball hung on to its second-place Pac-10 Conference standing thanks to a 73-68 victory over Washington in front of 3,092 at the Sports Arena on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Women of Troy improve to 16-6 overall and 10-3 in conference play, maintaining a half-game lead over third-place UCLA.

The Huskies fall to 9-14 overall and 5-8 in the Pac-10.

Thanks to a career-high 16 points, senior center Kim Gipson led the Trojans to their first season sweep over the Washington schools in five years. Fellow senior Rachel Woodward also finished in double digits with 12 points.

USC, which led by as much as 24 points in the second half, nearly let the game slip away. Ahead 65-41 with 12:49 remaining, the Women of Troy allowed Washington to take control of the game for nearly 11 minutes. USC made only one field goal and committed six fouls and four turnovers during this time. Meanwhile, the Huskies used a 24-5 run to come within five, 70-65, at the two-minute mark.

Time eventually ran out for Washington as it was forced to foul the Trojans down the stretch. Jamie Hagiya hit a shot at the line and Camille LeNoir dropped in a layup as the clock ran down for a final 73-68 win.

The Women of Troy led 43-24 at the half.

Up next, USC heads to the desert to face Arizona State on Thursday, Feb. 10, and Arizona on Saturday, Feb. 12.
