BERKELEY, CA - Cal scored three runs in the sixth inning to take a brief 3-2 lead, but the Golden Bears (1-3) could not hold their advantage, falling to UC Irvine (2-1), 7-3, Sunday at Evans Diamond. The Anteaters ended up capturing the three-game series, winning 10-1 Friday and losing to Cal, 5-4 in 11 innings, Saturday.
The Bears got all their runs in the fifth inning behind a two-run double by freshman first baseman Mike Van Winden and a sacrifice fly by junior Allen Craig off of UC Irvine starter Michael Koehler (1-0, 5.0 innings, six hits, three runs, one strikeout). Unfortunately for Cal, Chad Lundahl had a sacrifice fly and Brett Dalton had an RBI single off of Bear starter Eric Dworkis (0-1, 6.0 innings, 10 hits, three earned runs, no walks, five strikeouts) to give the Anteaters a 4-3 lead in the sixth. UC Irvine then put the game away when Mark Wagner hit a two-run homer off of Cal reliever Alec Harris in the seventh. The Anteaters' final run came in the ninth inning on a throwing error to the plate by Bear second baseman Josh Satin.
Glenn Swanson earned the save for UC Irvine, pitching the final 4.0 innings with three hits, no runs, no walks and six strikeouts. Wagner finished the day 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI and Dalton was 3-for-4 with a RBI. Satin and sophomore Brennan Boesch (2-for-4, double) had two hits apiece for the Bears.
