Beavers Place Five On Baseball All-Tourney Team

TEMPE, Ariz. - Oregon State placed five players on the all-tournament team for the Bob Schaefer Memorial Baseball Tournament that concluded Monday night at Packard Stadium. OSU pitchers Dallas Buck and Kevin Gunderson, outfielders Jacoby Ellsbury and Mike Lissman, and first baseman Mitch Canham were named to the 16-player squad.
OSU and host Arizona State both posted 3-1 records in the tournament, while Gonzaga was 1-2 and New Mexico State was 1-4. Oregon State beat New Mexico State 19-0, lost to Gonzaga 3-1, beat NMSU 11-2 and topped the ninth-ranked Sun Devils 12-6.
Canham (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens HS) was the tournament's hitting leader, batting .600 (9-for-15) and he was topped all players with seven runs scored. He drove in seven runs and had one double, one triple and one homer.
Buck (Newberg, Ore./Newberg HS) earned the win in OSU's opener, pitching one-hit, shutout ball over five innings while walking three and striking out nine. Gunderson (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic HS) won in relief against ASU, tossing the final 6 1/3 innings and allowing one run on three hits while walking none and striking out eight.
Ellsbury (Madras, Ore./Madras HS) batted .529 (9-for-17) with five runs batted in, three doubles, six runs scored and two stolen bases. Lissman (Ontario, Ore./Ontario HS) batted .429 (6-for-14), tied for the tournament lead with eight RBIs, had a tourney-high five doubles and also one triple and five runs scored.
Oregon State (3-1 overall) now goes to the Oakland Athletics Tournament this weekend in Phoenix. The Beavers play Missouri on Friday at 2 p.m. PST, Kansas State on Saturday at 2 p.m. PST, Northwestern on Sunday at 8 a.m. PST and Missouri on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. PST.
