Feb. 8, 2005
Bruins to Host No. 22 Bulldogs This Saturday . . .
The No. 11-ranked UCLA women's tennis team (4-2) has just one match scheduled this week, as the Bruins will host No. 22 Fresno State (1-0) this Saturday beginning at Noon. These two teams faced off at the Los Angeles Tennis Center last season, with the Bruins taking a narrow 4-3 victory. UCLA leads the all-time series 7-1. The Bulldogs received some bad news on Feb. 3, when they learned that No. 1 singles player Jelena Pandzic was ruled ineligible by the NCAA for her participation in a German tennis league prior to enrolling at Fresno State. Pandzic won her match at No. 1 singles against the Bruins a year ago. Live stats for Saturday's match can be accessed at UCLA's Official Website: http://uclabruins.collegesports.com.
UCLA Returns From USTA/ITA National Team Indoors . . .
UCLA went 1-2 at last week's USTA/ITA National Team Indoors in Madison, Wisc. The Bruins were eliminated from the main draw following a 4-3 loss to No. 12 Miami in the first round. UCLA bounced back a day later however, defeating No. 16 Texas A&M, 4-3 in a consolation match. In their final match of the tournament, the Bruins were defeated by No. 3 Clemson, 4-3. The only Bruins singles player to go undefeated on the weekend was junior Laura Gordon, who won matches against Miami and Clemson. She did not play against Texas A&M.
Bruins Check in at No. 11 Nationally . . .
After suffering two losses at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors last week, UCLA fell from No. 4 to No. 11 in this week's ITA Team Rankings released on Feb. 8. New team rankings will be released again on Feb. 15. Individually, Riza Zalameda is ranked No. 9 in singles and is followed by No. 20 Daniela Bercek, No. 122 Alex McGoodwin and No. 125 Elizabeth Lumpkin. In doubles, Bercek and Zalameda check in at No. 5. New individual rankings will not be released again until Feb. 22.
Zalameda Among Nation's Elite . . .
Not only does freshman Riza Zalameda lead the Bruins in singles victories with 16, she is one of just five players in the nation who are currently ranked in the top-10 in both the ITA Singles and Doubles Rankings. Ranked No. 9 in singles and No. 5 in doubles (W/Bercek), Zalameda is also one of only two freshmen on that list, joining Northwestern's Audra Cohen.
Briefly Looking Ahead . . .
Fresno State is the last non-conference opponent that the Bruins will face before getting into the heart of Pac-10 Conference play beginning with Arizona State on Feb. 18. The first Pac-10 counting match will not be until the Bruins travel up to Washington the weekend of Mar. 11 and 12. The only two non-conference matches left on the Bruins' schedule after this weekend will be meetings with Texas (Mar. 15) and Pepperdine (Apr. 14).
Head Coach Stella Sampras Webster . . .
Stella Sampras Webster is in her ninth season as head coach at UCLA, owning an overall record of 137-79 (.634). In her eight seasons in Westwood, the Bruins have finished in the top-10 at the NCAA Championships seven times, including a trip to the finals in 2004. As a player, Sampras Webster was a four-time All-American at UCLA from 1988-91, capturing the NCAA Doubles title (w/Allyson Cooper) as a freshman in 1988.
