Five Sun Devils Named To Bob Schaefer All-Tournament Team

TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- The Arizona State Sun Devils finished a successful weekend in the Bob Schaefer Memorial Baseball Tournament with a 3-1 record and placed four players on the all-tournament team. Junior left-handed pitcher Erik Averill, sophomore outfielder Colin Curtis, freshman shortstop Andrew Romine, freshman center fielder J.J. Sferra and senior catcher Tuffy Gosewisch were named to the 16-player all-tournament team.
The five-day, eight-game tournament featured Oregon State (3-1), Arizona State (3-1), Gonzaga (1-2) and New Mexico State (1-4) and was hosted by ASU at Packard Stadium. No tournament champion is declared, but Oregon State and ASU tied for the best record each with 3-1 marks.
Averill (Orange, Calif.) landed a spot on the all-tournament team and was also named the National Pitcher of the Week by the NCBWA and Collegiate Baseball. The junior lefty struck out a career-high 14 in a complete-game shutout over New Mexico State (2/4). For the season, Averill is 1-1 with 2.08 ERA and 20 strikeouts and no walks in 13.0 innings pitched.
Curtis (Issaquah, Wash.) finished the four-game tournament hitting .389 (7-for-18) with two runs scored and was fifth among all players with six RBI. His run-scoring single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Sun Devils to a dramatic 11-10 victory over New Mexico State (2/7). Curtis has recorded a hit in all seven games this season and has a current eight-game hitting streak dating back to the end of last season. He is hitting .414 (12-for-29) and leads the team with 12 hits and 10 RBI.
Romine (Lake Forest, Calif.) ranked 10th in the tournament with a .417 (5-for-12) batting average with a double, two runs scored, a pair of stolen bases and three RBI. Romine ranks third on the team among full-time starters hitting .368 (7-for-19).
Sferra (Phoenix, Ariz.) was the catalyst for the Sun Devils throughout the tournament. The speedy center fielder hit .353 (6-for-17) with six runs scored, two doubles, a triple, three RBI and three stolen bases. He was a big part of the 11-10 come-from-behind victory over NMSU plating the tying run with a single in the ninth inning and then scored the game-winner after stealing second base. Sferra currently has a four-game hitting streak and is hitting .308 (8-for-26) overall with seven runs, five RBI and three stolen bases.
Gosewisch (Scottsdale, Ariz.) ranked fifth in the tournament hitting .444 (8-for-18) with three multi-hit games, four doubles, a home run and eight RBI. The senior backstop is riding a current five-game hitting streak in which he is hitting .455 (10-for-22) with five doubles and eight RBI. Overall he is hitting .355 (11-for-31) and leads the team with a .613 slugging percentage.
Overall the Sun Devils hit .347 in the tournament and out-scored their opponent 39-30. ASU was perfect on the basepaths going 15-for-15 on stolen bases, including a school-record-tying four by redshirt freshman Rocky Laguna (Yuma, Ariz.) against New Mexico State (2/7).
