No. 16 California Travels to Moraga to Play Saint Mary's

WHAT'S ON TAP: The No. 16 Golden Bears (3-0 overall) travel to Moraga, CA, to take on Saint Mary's (4-0 overall). The match is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 11 at 11 a.m. at the Gael's Tim Korth Tennis Complex.

LAST WEEK'S ACTION: No. 17 California (3-0) defeated the University of Hawaii (0-3), 7-0, without dropping one set, at the UH Tennis Center. The Bears began the match by picking up the doubles point, winning all three matches convincingly. Cal's good play continued on to singles, with No. 3 in the nation Suzi Babos defeating Lauren Fitzgerald, 7-6; 6-4, on court one. Sophomore Monica Wiesener continued what has been a successful season, defeating Sylvia Jaros, 6-2; 7-5 on court two. Court three saw Marion Ravelojaona beat Justine Boutet, 6-0; 6-2. Courts four, five and six all recorded wins for the Bears as well, with Stephanie Kusano (6-0; 6-0), Cristina Visico (6-4; 6-1) and Jessica Shu (6-1; 6-0) all coasting to victories.

THIS WEEKS OPPONENT: Saint Mary's (4-0) is in the midst of a four-game dual match winning streak, racking up victories against UC Santa Cruz, San Jose State, Gonzaga and Portland. The Gael's are led by sophomore Aude Lambert, a 2004 WCC honorable mention pick, currently ranked No. 28 regionally. The Bears have only come up against Saint Mary's on three previous occasions, winning all three match-ups, most recently in 2004. Saint Mary's is coached by Lisa Alipaz (7th year, San Diego State, '95).

FRESHMAN SENSATION: Cal freshman Suzi Babos has transformed herself into one of the nation's premier players, boasting an 19-2 singles record (15-1 fall), the singles title from both the Cal Nike Invitational and ITA Northwest Regional Championships, and a No. 3 national ranking/No. 1 regional ranking. The Sopron, Hungary, native's record includes a 15-match win streak, and victories over Northwestern's No. 4 Cristelle Grier, Clemson's No. 5 Julie Coin and Stanford's Alice Barnes (No. 12) and Erin Burdette (No. 22).

FALL 2004: The Bears concluded a busy and successful fall season, competing in six tournaments. In those six tourneys, Cal captured two singles titles (Cal Nike Invitational, Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional Championships), as well a singles runner-up finish (ITA National Indoor Championships) and doubles runner-up finish (Cal Nike Invitational).

ROGAN'S LEGACY: In her 25 years at Cal, Jan Brogan has molded the Golden Bear program into one of the best in the country, guiding the Bears to 23 NCAA appearances, three AIAW showings and 18 Top-10 finishes since 1982. Brogan has also produced four national champion doubles teams, 54 All-Americans, 15 first team All-Pac-10 selections and three conference Player of the Year honorees. She currently boasts a 470-187 (.715) dual match record, making her the fifth winningest coach in University of California history. Brogan has received an impressive list of accolades. Her continued dedication to excellence earned her the Wilson/ITA National Coach of the Year award in 1990, in addition to ITA Northwest Region Coach of the Year honors in 1988, 1991 and 1993. She has also been named conference coach of the year eight times during her career, six consecutive years from 1982-1987 ('82-86 NorPac, '87 Pac-10) and twice more in 1992 and '94 (Pac-10). A successful teaching professional in Los Gatos before taking Cal's head coaching job in 1978, Brogan has been a member of the ITA Board of Directors, ITA Operating Committee, NCAA Championship Tennis Committee and is the co-chair of the ITA Sport Science Committee assignment in 1985 and in 1995 as the U.S. women's head coach at the World University Games.
