USC Pitching Shuts Out San Diego State, 6-0, In 2005 Opener
Feb. 8, 2005
LOS ANGELES - Five Trojan pitchers struck out 16 batters in a combined shutout Tuesday as the USC Trojans opened the 2005 baseball season with a 6-0 nonconference shutout of the San Diego State Aztecs at Dedeaux Field. It was the first opening day shutout for USC since 1988 when the Trojans won at Cal Poly (4-0).
Junior Brett Bannister (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) earned the win with a designated start for the Trojans. It was Bannister's first appearance in two years after battling injuries, including undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow last year. Bannister allowed only one hit in three innings with a walk and two strikeouts.
Junior transfer Jack Spradlin (Bonita) had the best effort with three innings, allowing four hits. Spradlin did not allow a walk and struck out six batters, including striking out the side in the fifth. Sophomore Ian Kennedy (Huntington Beach) struck out the side in the ninth in his second career relief appearance. Kennedy also struck out the side in his only relief appearance last year at UC Irvine.
In the first, the Trojans scored their lone run when San Diego State pitcher James Scott was called for a balk with the bases loaded, plating USC catcher Jeff Clement. Freshman second baseman Matt Cusick (Mission Viejo) led off the third with a single to left and scored on a double by right fielder Blake Sharpe. Sharpe moved to third on a ground ball by Clement and scored on a passed ball by catcher Jordan Swaydan for a 3-0 USC lead.
Cusick, the first USC freshman to leadoff in a season opener since Wes Rachels in 1995, reached base three out of his five at-bats (one hit and two walks).
Third baseman Billy Hart's RBI single in the sixth scored pinch runner Spencer Pabst from second in the sixth inning. USC rounded out the scoring with two runs in the seventh on an RBI double by Clement and RBI single by designated hitter Baron Frost.
USC will play No. 17 Long Beach State in a nonconference series this weekend, beginning on Friday (Feb. 11) at 6 p.m. at Dedeaux Field. Saturday's game at 2 p.m. will be played at Blair Field in Long Beach with the series finale on Sunday back at Dedeaux Field with a 1 p.m. start.
All three games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com with Gametracker live stats available for both USC home games.
