No. 1 Stanford Hosts No. 41 Sacramento State
Feb. 10, 2005
Stanford, Calif. - Top-ranked Stanford (5-0) returns to The Farm on Thursday to play host to No. 41 Sacramento State in dual action at 1:30 p.m. It is the second home match for the Cardinal this season. Sac St. is 3-2 on the year, after winning back-to-back home matches against Montana State and UC Davis.
The Cardinal defeated four ranked teams last weekend en route to the USTA/ITA National Women's Indoor Team Championship in Madison, Wis. It was the eighth title for Stanford and the wins extended the Cardinal's win streak to 34-straight matches.
This will be the second meeting between Stanford and Sacramento State. The first time around, Stanford swept the Hornets 4-0 in the first round of the 2002 NCAA Tournament, as the Cardinal went on to win the national championship.
Junior Amber Liu, the two-time NCAA singles champion, made her debut last weekend, winning two matches to help the Cardinal to the team title. As Stanford won 4-0 decisions against Georgia and Kentucky, three singles matches did not finish in the semifinal or final. Only sophomore Theresa Logar played and won all four of her matches, including a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Kentucky's Kim Coventry to clinch the win over the Wildcats and secure the second-straight National Indoor Team title for Stanford.
Stanford returns to the Taube Tennis Center for Thursday's match-up against the Hornets, the first of six-straight home matches for the Cardinal. Next week, Washington State and Washington will visit The Farm on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Then Fresno State, UCLA and USC will make their way to the Bay Area on Feb. 22, 25 and 26.
