UW Golfers Open Play in Hawaii with Record-Setting Start
Feb. 9, 2005
Waikoloa, Hawaii - The 26th-ranked Washington men's golf team is tied for fourth after the first 18 holes of play at the Taylor Made Waikoloa Intercollegiate held at the Waikoloa Village Golf Course. The Huskies shot 16-under 272 and trail Oklahoma State by eight strokes. The Cowboys posted a 24-under score of 264 to own a one-stroke lead over USC. Augusta State is in third place at 270.
Washington's opening round score was the best opening 18-hole by a Husky squad and just two strokes off the school record for a single-round score. The 16-under score was the best ever against par.
Washington's effort bettered the 274 recorded during the first round of The Nelson at the Stanford Golf Course in October of 2002. UW's all-time single round score was a 270 shot at the 2002 Western Intercollegiate at the Pasatiempo Golf Course.
Husky freshman Zach Bixler and junior James Lepp are tied for seventh overall after shooting 6-under 72 during the first round. Bixler's score was a career best and Lepp's was his low as a Husky. He shot 65 during his sophomore season at Illinois.
Travis Andrews and Alex Prugh are tied for 49th at 2-under 70 while Erik Olson is 94th at 3-over 74. Andrews opened his round with an eagle and then posted 17 straight pars. The Huskies top four scoring players combined for just two bogies.
OSU's Tyler Leon, Augusta State's Emmett Turner and Kansas' Tyler Docking are in a tie for medalist honors at 8-under 64.
