Cougar Golf Teams Open Spring Season Hosting Inland Collegiate

What's Happening: The Washington State men's and women's golf teams open the spring season hosting the Inland Collegiate, Feb. 14, at the Walla Walla Country Club in Walla Walla, Wash.

The Walla Walla Country Club will be playing at par-71, 6,531 yards for the men, and par-72, 5,969 yards for the women. The course will also be playing host to the Men's Pacific-10 Conference Golf Championships April 25-27.

The Field: The University of Idaho, Gonzaga University and Lewis-Clark State College will be bringing both their men's and women's teams to compete with the Cougars.

Last Year: The Washington State Cougars are the defending tournament team champions on both the men's and women's sides. Senior Jay-Lee Longbottom is returning as champion for the women. Recent Cougar graduate Ryan Camp took home the individual title last year on the men's side.

Anastasia Kostina Ranked: Junior Anastasia Kostina enters the spring season ranked No. 7 on the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, and No. 9 in the Golfstat Cup Standings. Kostina finished in the top eight in all four tournaments this fall season, including her first career tournament victory at the Stanford Women's Intercollegiate. The three-round score of 5-under 205 at Stanford was the lowest three-round total in school history. Kostina was named Golfweek Player of the Week, Oct. 23 for her performance at Stanford. Kostina also represented her home country of Russia at the Women's World Amateur Team Championships where she finished in eighth place.

Kim Welch Preseason Accolades: Senior Kim Welch was named a Golfweek Preseason All-American for the second consecutive year in the magazine's Sept. 4, issue.

Browner's Big Break: Former Cougar Tasha Browner (1998-2002) is competing for a spot on the LPGA tour on The Golf Channel's 'Big Break III: Ladies Only,' which first aired Feb. 8. The show airs on The Golf Channel, Tuesdays at 6 p.m. Pacific. Browner and nine other women will go through a series of elimination competitions, with the winner earning entry into select LPGA tournaments. The first round of elimination will take place Tuesday, Feb. 15.
