Bruin Swimmers Defeat USC 175.5-122.5

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - UCLA's swim team, guided by seventeenth year head coach Cyndi Gallagher, defeated crosstown rival USC Saturday afternoon 175.5-122.5 and improved to 6-3 overall and 3-3 in Pac-10 competition. The victory marks the second year in a row that the Bruins have claimed victory over the Trojans.
UCLA junior Kim Vandenberg posted victories in the 200-yard Freestyle (1:47.60), 200-yard Butterfly (1:55.56) and the 100-yard Butterfly (54.31). Overall, the Bruins took first place in ten of the 16 events.
Sophomore Katie Nelson claimed victory in the 1650-yard Freestyle with a time of 16:16.65, sophomore Katie Arnold won the 100-yard Backstroke with a finishing mark of 54.58 and freshman Nicolette Teo took the 100-yard Breaststoke at 1:02.97. Arnold also won the 50-yard Freestyle (23.58) while freshman Chiemi Yamamoto and senior Kim Scarborough also won their respective events.
Coach Gallagher is now 106-52-1 in her career at UCLA.
The Bruins next competition takes place from Feb. 23-26 at the Pac-10 Championships in Federal Way, WA.
