OSU Wrestles To Win Over Boise State, 27-12

Feb. 11, 2005

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State 165-pounder Matt Ellis won a battle of nationally ranked wrestlers as Oregon State beat Boise State 27-12 in Pacific-10 wrestling Friday night at Gill Coliseum. OSU heavyweight Jamie Rakevich knocked off another nationally ranked Bronco as the Beavers won during their annual OSU Wrestling Homecoming.

Oregon State (10-8-1 overall, 5-2-1 Pacific-10) now goes to Oregon on Sunday at 2 p.m. for the season's second Civil War, presented by Northwest Dodge Dealers.

Against Boise State (8-7, 3-3), the Beavers also got major decisions from 141-pounder Tim Norman, 157-pounder Tony Hook and 184-pounder Dan Pitsch. OSU reeled off four straight wins midway through the meet from 157 through 184 pounds to clinch the victory.

Ellis, ranked 18th by InterMat, took a 7-4 decision over BSU's Russell Brunson, who is ranked 15th by both Amateur Wrestling News and IM. Rakevich, filling in for Ty Watterson, went to double overtime for a 5-4 victory over the Broncos' Eric Smith, who is ranked 19th by AWN and 17th by IM.

'As a team, when we get on a roll, it's hard to stop us,' said Ellis, who improved to 10-2 this season. 'We really got into a groove as a team. There's a lot to be said for us when we're all together and we're wrestling as a group. Tim Norman wrestled great, Tony Hook wrestled great. Dan Pitsch really put it out there and Jamie (Rakevich) really put it out there and gave it his all when he was really tired. When people continually give and push themselves, everybody expects more out of themselves and we wrestle well as a team.'

Ellis, ranked second in the Pac-10, scored a takedown in the first period and added an escape and a takedown in the second for a 5-1 lead over Brunson, ranked third in the conference. Brunson closed within 5-4 with an escape and takedown in the third period before Ellis closed with an escape and added a point for riding time.

'He's a pretty tough kid,' Ellis said. 'The Pac-10 is kind of shuffled at my weight, everybody beats everybody so you don't know where you're going to end up in the mix. I had a bad weekend (losing two of three matches Jan. 28-29) and now it's anybody's ballgame.

'When somebody is ranked nationally, it means he's pretty good at what he does so I just went out there and did my best.'

The teams traded forfeits at the opening two weights, with BSU's Andrew Hochstrasser - ranked fifth by AWN and seventh by IM - unable to go at 125 pounds and OSU's Bobby Pfennigs sitting out at 133. Norman got the Beavers going with a 10-2 decision over Jacob Scoles, scoring a takedown with 14 seconds left to earn the major decision.

At 149, the Beavers' Orlando Perez stayed within 6-0 of Ben Cherrington - ranked eighth by AWN and IM - to keep the Beavers in front 10-9 in the team race. Hook started OSU's streak of wins with a 12-2 decision over Lex Case that included a pair of near falls, as he won for the eighth time in his last 12 matches to improve to 10-8.

After Ellis' win, OSU 174-pounder Jeremy Larson topped Ben Gilliland 6-1 for the 10th win in his last 16 matches and Pitsch rolled up a 15-4 major decision over Jason Cates, scoring a pair of takedowns in the first period and adding a near fall, to wrap up the dual. Bronco 197-pounder Casey Phelps stopped Oregon State's streak with a 3-1 decision over Travis Gardner.

Rakevich and Smith were tied 1-1 at the end of the third period and neither scored in the first overtime. In the second, Rakevich scored an escape and a takedown and Smith scored an escape and a takedown to keep it knotted at 4-4, but Rakevich added an escape with six seconds remaining for the victory.

The alums on hand for the OSU Wrestling Homecoming represented 14 individual conference championships, 12 All-America finishes and three individual NCAA titles during their careers.
