Huskies Fall To No. 9 Tennessee, 2-1
Feb. 13, 2005
LAS VEGAS-- No. 9 Tennessee (8-0) used a two-run home run in the sixth inning to defeat the eighth-ranked Washington softball team (4-3), 2-1. UT pitcher Monica Abbott kept the Huskies guessing all day, striking out 18 and holding Washington to just one hit.
The game opened like a classic pitcher's duel with just one base runner through the first three innings. UT hurler Monica Abbott kept the Huskies in check, striking out the first 10 batters she faced. UW ace Ashley Boek gave up a bunt single and stuck out five through three innings, including all three batters she faced in the third.
The Lady Vols threatened in the top of the fourth inning, loading the bases with three singles. Boek worked her way out of the jam with a strikeout and right fielder Jacki Hansen ran a fly ball down in foul territory to end the inning.
UW loaded the bases when Kathy Fiske took a pitch off the hand. The Huskies got on board when Charters scored on a wild pitch. The Lady Vols got the second out of the inning with a failed suicide bunt and Abbott got out of the inning with her 11th strikeout of the day.
Tennessee came back in the sixth inning, taking the lead with a two-run home run by Katherine Card. It proved to be all the scoring UT would need as Abbott did not allow another Husky to reach base, cruising to the 2-1 victory.
Boek (2-2) took the tough loss, scattering six hits and striking out nine.
The Huskies round out the Louisville Slugger Las Vegas Classic this afternoon when they face UC Santa Barbara at 2:30 pm.
