No. 6 Cardinal Win Stanford Invitational With 3-1 Victory Over LBSU

Stanford, Calif. - Catcher Leah Nelson went 2-for-2 with two RBI to lead the No. 6 Stanford softball team to a 3-1 victory over Long Beach State this afternoon at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal (6-1) went 3-0 in the Stanford Invitational to win the tournament.
Stanford got on the board in the top of the third inning when Jackie Rinehart got things started when she drew a walk with one out. Lauren Lappin singled to move Rinehart to second then Leah Nelson hit a single to score Rinehart, one batter later. Lappin would score on an error by the first baseman to put the Cardinal up 2-0.
Stanford scored another run in the top of the fifth. Lappin walked then stole second for the Cardinal. She was awarded third after interference by the shortstop. Nelson singled to score Lappin and the score 3-0 in favor of Stanford.
Pitcher Laura Severson (4-1) picked up the win in the circle for the Cardinal, scattering two hits over six innings of work with four strikeouts. Freshman Lauren Nydam recorded her first save on the year with one inning of work in the seventh.
Marcel Torres took the loss for the 49ers, allowing two runs on three hits in the first three innings.
Lauren Lappin went 1-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and a stolen base.
Stanford is back in action next weekend at the South Florida Tournament in Tampa, Florida, where they open with Hofstra on Friday February 19.
