Feb. 13, 2005
LOS ANGELES, CA - Behind the power hitting of Chris Errecart and Josh Satin, the California baseball team bounced back from a tough loss Saturday, defeating Loyola Marymount in both ends of a doubleheader Sunday, 8-5 and 11-9. The Golden Bears improved to 3-4 on the season, while the Lions fell to 1-2.
A three-run homer by sophomore right fielder Errecart in the top of the ninth inning gave Cal the 8-5 win in the first game of the doubleheader. The two teams had been locked at 5-5 since the seventh inning, until Errecart's first shot of the day gave the Bears the victory.
Cal had scored two runs in the first inning when a wild pitch by LMU starter Jeff Stevens allow Satin to score and senior James Holder had an RBI single. After the Lions scored three runs in the third off of Bear starter Brandon Morrow (5.0 innings, eight hits, five runs, three walks, six strikeouts), Satin tied the game, 3-3, with a RBI single in the top of the fourth.
With the game tied at 3-3, LMU's A.J. LaMonda had a two-run singled to right, to give the Lions the mid-game 5-3 lead. But Cal chipped away, responding with one run in the six on a RBI single by senior Matt Einspahr and a run in the seventh when Satin hit his first home run of the day off LMU reliever Gabe Bueno to tie the game heading into the ninth.
Sophomore Michael Cooper (1-0) earned the win for the Bears, after holding the Lions to one hit over two innings. Junior Alex Trafton picked up his first save of the season for Cal, throwing the bottom of the ninth with two hits and two strikeouts. Freshman Brad Meyers received the loss for LMU after giving up the home run in the top of the ninth.
In game two, the Bears came back from a 7-4 deficit by scoring six runs in the fifth inning on a RBI triple by Brennan Boesch, a sacrifice fly by Jason Corder, a RBI double by Kyle Spraker, a two-run homer by Satin and a solo home run by Errecart. Cal added a run in the sixth on a solo home run by Corder.
Boesch finished the second game 3-for-4 with a RBI, while Satin was 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI, and Errecart was 2-5 with a home run.
The winning pitcher for the Bears was junior reliever Joe Todoroff, who pitched 4.0 innings with five hits, two runs, two walks and three strikeouts. Senior left-hander Travis Talbott earned the save, throwing 2.0 innings with no hits, no runs, no walks and three strikeouts.
