No. 16 Softball Stumbles Against No. 18 Nebraska, 4-3
Feb. 13, 2005
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The No. 16 ranked Oregon State softball team let a 3-2 lead slip away in the final inning as No. 18 ranked Nebraska rallied for a 4-3 victory against the Beavers in Sunday's final game of the UNLV Desert Classic.
OSU (4-3) finished the weekend with a 1-2 record, while Nebraska held a 2-1 record in its first week of action.
'Overall it was a disappointing weekend to come back with a 1-2 record, especially when the two losses were games we could have won,' said Walker.
Sophomore hurler Brianne McGowan suffered her first loss of the year against the Huskers, falling to 3-1 overall. Nebraska sophomore Devin Porter hit a two-run single in the top of the seventh to cap off the Huskers' come-from-behind victory.
'Brianne pitched really well this weekend - she threw a lot of good batters and got some tough outs,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'Today she made a few mistakes, but that's part of the growing process early in the season.'
NU finished with a 12-4 edge on hits in the game.
'We definitely saw a lot of growth in our team in a lot of areas that needed work, which is a good thing,' said Walker. 'Everything that we need to adjust and fix is well within our capabilities and hopefully we'll correct some of those things sooner rather than later.'
Things don't get any easier as the Beavers return to action on Thursday at 4 p.m. against No. 19 ranked Fresno State University in the Capital Classic hosted by San Diego State.
