Beavers Top Portland 6-4 In Baseball Home-Opener

Feb. 15, 2005

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Mike Lissman had a three-run double in the first inning and doubled home the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Oregon State beat Portland 6-4 in non-league baseball Tuesday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Starting pitcher Dallas Buck had nine strikeouts for OSU, which played the earliest home-opener in its 96-year baseball history.

The Beavers (4-1 overall) now go to the San Diego Tournament. OSU plays California-Davis on Saturday at 1 p.m., host San Diego on Sunday at 2 p.m. and USD again on Monday at 2 p.m.

On a sunny afternoon with temperatures in the high 40s, Oregon State was able to get in a game after being rained out of four games at the Oakland Athletics Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz., last weekend. The Pilots (1-2) also lost two games to rain at that event so the teams added the game to their schedules.

'It was very important for us to get a win and it was very important for us to hit some live pitching,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'We pitched plenty good enough to make the game a different score but we didn't do some other things ... 'Sometimes that first game at home, you want to play well and maybe you play a little less loose than you should.'

Lissman's double staked OSU to a 3-0 lead before Portland starter Given Kutz retired an OSU hitter, but a double play helped the Pilots escape without any further damage. Meanwhile, Buck was striking out eight hitters his first time through the Pilot order; UP did make it 3-1 in the third when one of those strikeouts reached base on a wild pitch and turned into an unearned run.

A pair of errors helped Portland score three times in the top of the fifth against Buck, with only one of the runs earned, to go in front 4-3. In his five innings of work, Buck struck out nine while allowing five hits and one walk.

'I felt we had a couple of plays we didn't make to help Dallas get out of some innings, we forced him into some situations where he had to throw too many pitches,' Casey said. 'We're going to be much better than that, but we did the deal at the end of the game.

The Beavers came back in the bottom of the inning as Andy Jenkins delivered a run-scoring single to tie it at 4-4. After reliever Nate Fogle pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the sixth, OSU went back in front in the bottom of the sixth. Jacoby Ellsbury led off with a double down the rightfield line; with two out, he scored on Lissman's double off the leftfield fence to give Oregon State a 5-4 lead.

OSU picked up another run in the seventh when Jenkins led off with a double, then scored on Billy Munich's sacrifice fly. Kevin Gunderson pitched a hitless final three innings for his first save of the season, walking one and striking out three.

Fogle earned the win, evening his record at 1-1. He pitched one inning, striking out three and allowing two hits. Allowing just one earned run on Tuesday, the Beavers lowered their team earned run average to 2.36 this season.

After his two doubles against Portland, Lissman has seven on the season and has driven in 12 runs; the sophomore outfielder is batting .444.

'Whatever it takes to win, whatever helps the team out - it doesn't matter if it's one double or five,' Lissman said. 'Our pitchers came out and threw well throughout the day, and that sets the tone. The first seven or eight batters don't even touch the ball off Dallas Buck - you can't ask for anything better than that coming out ... as long as we play as a team and keep playing as a team, that's all that matters - getting wins. It doesn't matter how we get them.'

Ellsbury finished 4-for-5 with a double and a stolen base as the All-America candidate pushed his batting average to .591 this spring. With Ellsbury and Jenkins adding doubles against Portland, the Beavers have 21 two-base hits in their first five games.

OSU now has an all-time record of 77-19 in home-openers, winning 16 of their last 18 and 31 of their last 34 on Opening Day at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The earliest in the year that the Beavers had played on their home diamond prior to Tuesday came on Feb. 22, 1995 with a 4-3 win over Western Oregon.
