California's Errecart, UCLA's Rustich Named Pac-10 Baseball Player/Pitcher of the Week.
Feb. 15, 2005
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - CALIFORNIA sophomore outfielder Chris Errecart and UCLA sophomore right-handed pitcher Brant Rustich have been named Pac-10 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week for the week of February 8-14, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Errecart, from Stockton, Calif., went 7-for-13 (.538) with a double, two home runs and six RBI last weekend at Loyola Marymount. He was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI in game one on Feb. 12. In game two, which was the first game of a doubleheader on Feb. 13, Errecart was a perfect 3-for-3, including the game-winning three-run homer in the top of the ninth in the Bears' 8-5 win. In the second game of the doubleheader, Errecart was 2-for-5 with a solo home run in Cal's six-run fifth inning. Errecart finished the weekend with 14 total bases, a 1.077 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage.
Rustich, from El Cajon, Calif., was masterful on Feb. 13 against Cal State Northridge as he picked up his first win of the season with a complete game performance, allowing just one unearned run. Rustich struck out eight and needed just 113 pitches en route to his first career complete game. He got stronger as the game progressed, retiring seven of the last nine batters he faced. The right-hander was not scheduled to pitch in the game because of a rainout two days earlier, but due to Bryan Beck's sore pitching shoulder, Rustich was reinserted into the starting slot. Rustich lowered his season ERA over two full runs down to 2.08. Opposing hitters are now batting a meager .197 against him.
The Player of the Week honor is the first-ever for Errecart, while it is the 38th such honor for California. The Pitcher of the Week honor is the first ever for Rustich and the 37th selection all-time for UCLA.
