Bruins Head to USTA/ITA National Team Indoors . . .
The second-ranked UCLA men's tennis team (8-0) looks to continue its unbeaten streak this week when it heads to Chicago for the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships, hosted by the University of Illinois. UCLA will face No. 25 Oklahoma State in the first round on Thursday at Noon (CST). The winner of that match will face either No. 7 Stanford or No. 9 Virginia in the second round on Friday. The Bruins took second in last year's event (losing to Illinois) and have won the title seven times since 1973, with the last championship coming in Seattle back in 2001. This year's event will take place at the Mid-Town Tennis Club, the largest indoor tennis club in the world. Live results can be accessed at: http://fightingillini.com
Last Year at the Indoors . . .
UCLA defeated No. 10 Kentucky (4-2), No. 3 Florida (4-2) and No. 7 Mississippi (4-3) en route to the finals at last year's USTA/ITA National Team Indoors hosted by the University of Washington in Seattle. Last year's final featured the sixth-seeded Bruins and top-seeded Illinois. The fighting Illini won the match 4-0, however the Bruins got revenge at the NCAAs in May, posting a 4-2 victory in the semifinals, snapping Illinois' 64-match winning streak.
USC Match Rescheduled for March 1 . . .
UCLA's scheduled match against cross-town rival USC last Friday was postponed due to rain. With the forecast calling for rain again on Saturday, both coaches agreed to delay the match until Tuesday, Mar. 1 at 1:30 p.m. It will be held at USC's Marks Tennis Stadium.
Shutout Streak Ends Against San Diego . . .
UCLA, which had won its first seven matches of the season by 7-0 scores, surrendered its first point of the season in a 6-1 victory over No. 45 San Diego last Tuesday at the LATC. San Diego's point came at the No. 1 singles position, where fifth-ranked Pierrick Ysern won when Bruin senior Luben Pampoulov had to retire due to injury. Pampoulov won the first set 6-4 and was down 2-3 in the second when he retired. Other than that, everything else was status quo for the Bruins, who captured the doubles point and won the rest of their singles matches, four out of five in straight sets.
Gruendler Likely to Play at Team Indoors . . .
Sophomore Philipp Gruendler was supposed to appear in his first dual match of the season against USC last Friday, however that match was postponed due to rain. Instead, he will likely be in the lineup when the Bruins take the court at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors this week in Chicago. Gruendler owned a 21-4 dual-match record a year ago playing mostly at Nos. 5 and 6 singles positions. He was ruled ineligible for the first eight matches of this season due to his involvement in club tennis over in Europe prior to enrolling at UCLA.
