Following a soggy weekend in Tempe, Ariz., for the mostly rained out Kajikawa Softball Tournament, the Bruins head south to generally sunny San Diego, Calif., for the Campbell/Cartier Tournament but extended weather forecasts show the possibility of rain on Friday and Saturday. All of UCLA's games this weekend are scheduled to be among the first events at SDSU's new Softball Stadium, located on campus next to the school's baseball facility, Tony Gwynn Stadium.

Rain Washes Away Kajikawa Tournament, Bruins Fall to Syracuse
A large storm front marching through Arizona forced the cancellation of the majority of the Kajikawa Softball Tournament, hosted by Arizona State. All scheduled games on Friday and Saturday were rained out and several teams chose to leave Tempe, Ariz., rather than take a chance on losing Sunday's schedule of games as well.

After scheduled games against Cal State Northridge, Nevada, Sacramento State and Syracuse were rained out during the first two days of the tournament, UCLA's Sunday opponent, UMass, was replaced by Syracuse for an 8:30 am first pitch.

The Bruins started the game in impressive fashion. Batting as the visiting team, junior All-American Caitlin Benyi led off with a home run, her first of the season, to give UCLA a 1-0 lead after just one batter had stepped to the plate.

Unfortunately, a two-run home run by the Orange's Courtney Mosch in the bottom of the fourth inning gave Syracuse a 2-1 lead, and the Bruins were able to put up just one more hit and two base runners for the remainder of the game, eventually losing by that 2-1 margin. Freshman pitcher Anjelica Selden entered the game in relief in the bottom of the fifth inning and struck out all six batters she faced, but the UCLA offense was unable to extend the game or put up the offense to win in the final innings.
